As you may already know, Vee and I have eczema, so I’m always looking out for high quality natural / organic skincare products that would soothe our sensitive skin. And I’m thankful to review the luxurious Baby Wash and Calendula Remedy provided by Four Cow Farm.

About Four Cow Farm

At Four Cow Farm, a Mother, Grandmother and former Midwife began making creams and balms which were as good and natural as possible for her two little grandchildren. The family decided it was time that other parents had access to baby creams and balms made from only pure, genuine, natural, naturally derived and organic ingredients and nothing else. No artificial additives or chemical hazards whatsoever.

The natural and organic baby skincare line is made out of their farm in Australia.

Our Detailed Review

(a) Four Cow Farm Baby Wash

About the Baby Wash:

Purpose: For babies as an all-over body wash that’s richly soothing and moisturising. Suitable for irritated skin, dry hair or scalp or those sensitive to chemicals. May be used on skin affected by hives or eczema.

Ingredients: Purified water, saponified 100% olea europaea (olive) oil, certified organic echinacea augustifolia extract, citric acid (from citrus fruit).

Rating Guide: ★ Oh no! ★★ Poor ★★★ Fair ★★★★ Good ★★★★★ Excellent!

(a) Packaging: ★★★★★ This largest size (485ml) comes in a squirt bottle, which is very convenient during bath time. One squirt is enough to clean my entire body. (Vee loves squirting the bottle so much that I’ve to stop him from wasting the precious baby wash!)

(b) Effectiveness: ★★★★★ I like that there are minimal ingredients in the baby wash — important for delicate baby skin and in ruling out skin allergies. Hubby and I are impressed by the super moisturising effect from the saponified 100% olive oil. The whole family has been using it as a body wash, and we feel absolutely pampered by it. Hard to swop back to our previous wash (a pure castile soap).

We also use it to wash Vee’s hair, which leaves it very moisturised. I’d definitely use it on baby #2 as well.

(c) Overall Value: ★★★★ Each 485ml bottle of Baby Wash retails at SGD32.90. As a comparison, it’s about the same price as Vee’s previous organic baby wash and double the price of our pure castile soap. Since it’s a lot more moisturising than what we’ve been using, the price is well justified.

A fabulous head-to-toe wash for babies and those with dry or sensitive skin.

—

What we like about it:

Very moisturising

Minimal ingredients, with only the bare essentials (less is more!)

Can be used from head to toe

What can be improved:

Offer the baby wash in large 1-litre bottles for bulk purchase savings

—

(b) Four Cow Farm Calendula Remedy

About the Calendula Remedy:

Purpose: For calming inflamed or irritated skin. Can be used on skin affected by eczema, hives, bites or contact dermatitis or for soothing minor cuts and scrapes.

Ingredients: Certified organic calendula officinalis (calendula) in olea europaea (olive) oil, beeswax, cetearyl alcohol (veg. fatty alcohol), d-alpha tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E non-GMO), certified organic simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil, certified organic chamaemelum anthemis nobile (roman chamomile) essential oil, parfum (natural preservative).

Note: As the Calendula Remedy is over 80% organic calendula-infused olive oil, it will turn a little liquid when it’s hot. To add to its itch-soothing abilities, you can keep it in the fridge.

Did it say “parfum”? Where there is a reference to ‘parfum’ in our ingredients lists, that actually refers to a 100% natural essential oils-based preservative (one of the most expensive in the market!) which we use for its naturalness, safety and efficacy. (Source: Four Cow Farm – Our Ingredients)

Rating Guide: ★ Oh no! ★★ Poor ★★★ Fair ★★★★ Good ★★★★★ Excellent!

(a) Packaging: ★★★★★ The round jar is quite standard and suitable for such balms. I always wash my hands clean before scooping a little out. Or use a small spatula.

(b) Effectiveness: ★★★★★ I was hit by a persistently dry and ITCHY eczema patch on my shin recently, so it was a great time to test out the Calendula Remedy. Every evening, I’d rub some of the balm onto the dry patch and the itch does go away with the rich moisturising effect. If the itch is really bad, I’d apply some in the morning as well.

After 2 months of using the balm, I’m glad it keeps the itch under control without me relying on steroidal creams, especially during pregnancy.

Vee saw me use the new balm and he wanted to try too. I applied a little on an eczema patch behind his neck. No adverse reaction, good. Since he doesn’t have dry, itchy skin, I didn’t let him continue using it.

(c) Overall Value: ★★★★ Each 100gm jar of Calendula Remedy retails at SGD28.90. In Singapore, it’s about 10-20% cheaper than a popular brand of calendula cream we’ve tried (but which contains methyparaben).

Great for soothing dry and itchy eczema-prone skin.

—

What we like about it:

Very moisturising, suitable for soothing dry and itchy skin

What can be improved:

Beeswax is added to make it a balm and to add to its emollient properties. If possible, use a non-animal related substitute?

Just after I cleaned Vee’s poopy bums with cloth wipes, this question from Joey reached me via email:

Hi MieVee, I have several Happy Heiny’s cloth wipes which are not put to good use yet. I’ve tried using them to clean my baby’s bum after he pooped but the affair seemed messy. May I know how do you use the cloth wipes in cleaning poop? Dip it into the water, wipe bum and dip into water again or use a clean cloth wipe? Hope you can explain. Thanks!

Why Use Cloth Wipes?

For the benefit of mums new to this idea, these are my reasons for converting to cloth wipes:

Cloth wipes clean more effectively than cotton wool: In the early weeks, we used cotton wool dipped in cooled boiled water. It was a tedious and messy affair — need to stock up on cotton wool, tear the roll into small pieces, keep in a container, hard to clean big poo mess well, and lint flies all over the place, making me sneeze. Hubby and I could complain ALL DAY about using cotton wool on a baby who poo-ed up to 11 times a day!

Cloth wipes clean more effectively than disposable baby wipes: Cloth wipes made of fabric such as cotton sherpa terry or bamboo can grab poopy mess very well. Usually 2 are enough per poopy bum. For the king-of-poo-messes (think 1 poo in 4 to 10 days — normal for breastfed babies), 4 wipes are enough. Disposable baby wipes are thin and skimpy, so many are needed for a big mess.

Cloth wipes clean baby up without unnecessary chemicals: We used disposable baby wipes when cotton wool ran out and Vee’s super-sensitive skin would start turning red. Our nurse advised us to rinse the baby wipes before using them. (Duh, what’s the point of getting wet wipes then?!?) My Pigeon Baby Wipes recycled box states “Methylparaben” among its list of ingredients. I try to avoid parabens in our skincare products because of its controversy linked to breast cancer. (To find out more about parabens, read this on Wikipedia.)

Cloth wipes don’t expire: I received 6 packs of free AVENT baby wipes when we bought our steriliser. They expired even before Vee was born! They were recycled to clean the house. (Always check the expiry date of wet wipes. The discounted ones are suspects nearing expiry.)

Cloth wipes don’t run out: With a decent stash of 18 wipes and daily laundry, we have never run out of cloth wipes, even on a breastfed pooping-machine. Even if they are washed and still damp on a rainy day, they can be used. No running out means no constant checking for best buys, no running to the stores to stock up, no taking up precious wardrobe space.

Cloth wipes save money: I spent RM82.50 on 15 cloth wipes (3 wipes were free) and that was all. Assuming Vee uses 10 Pigeon Baby Wipes a day, he’d need 3,650 wipes after 1 year. That’s 52 packs of Pigeon Baby Wipes (70 pieces per pack), costing RM312 (based on RM6 per pack bought in bulk), for the FIRST year only. I’d rather use the money to build his education fund.

Cloth wipes don’t need me to carry a fussy baby to the bathroom and risk slipping 10 times a day: My confinement lady is an expert in washing Vee’s poopy bums over the sink. But as a first-time mother, I certainly wasn’t confident of doing that, especially when he poo-ed so many times a day. And definitely not when he already weighed 9kg at 6 months old! Changing him on the changing table is my comfort zone.

How to Clean Poopy Bums Using Cloth Wipes?

Things to get ready:

Cotton sherpa terry: great at grabbing poop messes

Stash of cloth wipes (I have 18 on rotation and never run out): Tip #1: one side of the cloth wipe should be made of fabric good at grabbing messes, for. e.g. cotton sherpa terry or bamboo velour. Tip #2: Use same print for bums purpose to avoid confusion with those for baby’s face!

Flask of cooled boiled water (I used this in the first 6 months when cooled boiled water is recommended for cleaning babies.)

At home: Small tub

Outdoors: Small squirt bottle with “lock” (I recycle a makeup remover bottle.)

An alternative to using cooled boiled water is a wipes solution without preservatives. Personally, I find this unnecessary and cooled boiled water has worked fine for us.

Steps (At Home):

Pour water into small tub (For older babies, simply wet cloth(s) using drinking-quality tap water.)

Wet 1 or more cloth wipes in water. Wring a little. (Experience with your baby will tell you how many to prepare.)

Open up poopy cloth diaper.

Use the rough side to grab poo mess (For baby girl, always wipe from front to back.)

Place poopy cloth wipes into poopy cloth diaper.

Close up the cloth diaper and place it into a dry pail.

Steps (Outdoors):

Pour cooled boiled water / tap water into small squirt bottle and place in diaper bag.

Squirt water onto 1 or more cloth wipes.

Open up poopy cloth diaper.

Use the rough side to grab poo mess (For baby girl, always wipe from front to back.)

Place poopy cloth wipes into poopy cloth diaper.

Close up the cloth diaper and place it into a wet bag.

For fully breastfed babies (not started on solid foods), the poo is water soluble, so you may throw everything into the washing machine without spraying. Otherwise, on wash day, spray the poopy cloth wipes together with poopy cloth diapers before washing.

Line-drying under the sun would remove any stains naturally.

Cloth wipes can also be used for potty-training babies and toddlers who poo into the potty. (Read 18 Sure-Fire Tips to Early Potty Training Success in case you missed it.) Happy poop-cleaning!

Dream Scissors

Since Vee was a newborn, I have been targeting the Combi Haircut Set, but was put off by the price tag of more than RM130. There was no competing brand offering such (round-tip) haircut scissors in departmental stores.

Why cut his hair personally in the first place? Reasons aplenty:

Hygiene (A friend’s newborn developed bad rashes after a shave by a hairdresser using unhygienic tools.)

Safety (I am more able to handle my boy and know exactly when he would fidget than others.)

Saves money (Boys need a trim every couple of months. Multiply that by a few more children in future and the savings are significant if I learn to cut my kids’ hair.)

Saves time (Haircut in the comfort of our home, during relaxed afternoons.)

Anyway, his full head of newborn hair fell and took months to grow back. Then his fringe started to reach his eyes and an urgent haircut was needed. Luckily, the Combi Haircut Set (original listed price: S$45.90) was on 20% promotion in Isetan Singapore when we were there and I bought it. Finally…

First Trial Cut

This was a HUGE drama involving my parents (to grab Vee), my sisters (to entertain him with toys) and myself (figuring how much to snip off). Vee was strapped up in his Fisher-Price booster seat and must have wondered what the whole fuss was about.

I completed the job and he looked fine until recently…

The REAL Cut

About two months passed and his hair was long all over, not just at the fringe. Strangers started greeted Vee, “Hi girl!” *Hmmph!*

Then Lunar New Year arrived and there is this strange superstition of no haircut during the festival (lasting 15 days) or bad luck would befall. Anyway, we were too busy celebrating the new year and Vee’s birthday. During one gathering, a relative (ex-hairdresser) who cuts her truckload of children’s hair briefly taught me how to do a boy’s haircut:

Grab a bunch of hair at the front upwards, perpendicularly to the scalp, snip horizontally across

Move lower and grab another bunch of hair. Use the above cut hair as a guide to know how much to snip

Keep repeating for the front until getting a nicely-layered fringe

Repeat for the sides and back

Yesterday, Vee woke up early from his nap and we had lots of time to burn. I laid a huge piece of cloth on the floor, plopped him into the Bumbo Baby Seat with Play Tray, bribed him with a few toys and started snipping away.

How to Cut Boy’s Hair

Snipped the front…

Snipped the sides…

Snipped the back…

Fun!

Got more confident and snipped more… Done! I was soooo proud of myself for making my son look like a boy again.

Vee was absolutely co-operative while I carried out the haircutting experiment. Phew!

—

More Tips for the Mummy Hairdresser-Wannabe

Put a long-sleeved bib on the child for easier cleaning up later (I need to get one, hopefully Vee would be willing to wear it.)

Do not blow the fan near you or risk getting hair all over the place (Consider switching on the air-conditioner for a short while.)

—

What I like about it (the scissors):

Rounded-tip is a good safety feature

Easy to hold

Cuts well

What can be improved:

Sell the scissors without the comb so that the price is lower

A Mummy is facing 10 problems cloth-diapering her newborn (read about it here), so I thought of helping address her obstacles:

1) None of my bought cloth diapers seem to fit my small newborn!

Apparently I was too cautious, not wanting to buy Extra Small sizes because I thought “they wouldn’t last too long.”

MieVee says: During the last trimester of pregnancy, I knew Vee was going to be a big baby, so I bought Small diaper covers and skipped the Extra-Smalls. At 3.5kg at birth, he fitted into Small Bummis covers (reviewed here) nicely. For an average-sized or preemie baby, Extra-Small covers would be needed.

2) My prefolds and diaper cover plan to cloth diaper my newborn was a failure.

How silly of me, I have a stash of prefold diapers that were Regulars (again, I thought buying Infant size would be a waste) which did not fit my newborn at all, NOR did they even fit in ANY of the XS or S sized diaper covers that I had.

MieVee says: I used traditional cloth diapers (lampin) instead of prefolds in the first month. They could be easily folded to fit a newborn.

3) Leaking problems!

Again, this was a sizing issue, even with a small sized Fitted Diaper. I was breastfeeding and my boy leaked all over my lap, grr!!

MieVee says: Similar to Problem #1, Extra-Small covers over traditional cloth diapers or Infant-prefolds may be a better fit.

4) My little boy LOVES pooping on freshly changed diapers.

Happened so many times after I put on a clean diaper, to find out that minutes later he “felt” like the diapers were just too nice not to poop on immediately!

MieVee says: Breastfed newborn poo-poos very regularly, as breastmilk has a laxative effect. Vee poo-ed up to 11 times a day! Therefore, traditional cloth diapers with covers is a very cost-effective way of cloth-diapering a newborn.

5) My social support system wasn’t really so “supportive”.

My husband was joking with me that I put so much effort in wanting to Cloth Diaper, but apparently so many things tend to go wrong! And I don’t think my mother in law was into the idea of Cloth Diapers too much either!

MieVee says: Support is very important in the first month because Mummy is supposed to be resting during confinement. Let your family understand the benefits of cloth-diapering. (Read “Why I Love Cloth Diapers” here.)

My confinement lady was responsible for changing Vee’s cloth diapers, and washing (using washing machine) / sunning / folding them throughout the month.

After the first month, Vee was on a mixture of Small Drybees Pocket Diapers (reviewed here) and traditional cloth diapers during the day. At night, he used Drybees Fleece Pocket Diapers (reviewed here). Daddy has been supportive since the beginning (saves him $$$) and helps with diaper changes.

6) The cloth diapers were so bulky!

On a tiny newborn, almost everything I put on makes my baby an awkward sumo wrestler on his crotch (which didn’t look too comfortable). I was critcized again about this by my social support system, heh.

MieVee says: Similar to Problem #1, Extra-Small covers over traditional cloth diapers or Infant-prefolds may be a better fit.

7) Could I even be bothered with laundry right now??

Cloth Diapering requires ULTIMATE care, but seriously, with a million other things to do with the baby the first month, should I really put so much effort in it?

MieVee says: Similar to Problem #5, Mummy should be resting while someone helps with the laundry matters. Baby clothes, handkerchiefs and other accessories need to be washed too. Cloth diapers can be washed with the other baby items. Just need someone to spend 5-10 minutes a day spraying poo-poo into the toilet bowl.

8 ) I couldn’t figure out how to Snappi lampins (or prefold for that matter) properly.

In the end I gave up. Needs more practice. Sigh.

MieVee says: Vee was on lampin and a diaper cover, without the need to use Snappi or pins. The diaper cover was the correct fit, so the lampin could stay in place. Try it out.

9) My “one sized” pocket diapers were not really “one sized fits all”.

It certainly did not fit on too well on my newborn. Even at the smallest setting, it was still huge and left gaps at the legs.

MieVee says: “One-size” diapers usually fit babies from about 5kg. For this reason, I prefer sized-diapers in the early months.

10) My apartment laundry area had no direct contact with the sun.

So the stains on the diapers couldn’t benefit from the sunlight. Also, they take ages to dry. Sigh….

MieVee says: Sunning is important to get rid of the stains naturally. During a sunny day, Vee’s diapers are dry and stain-free after about 4 hours. Try looking out for another spot in the house that gets the sunshine?

It takes a bit of trial and error in the early stage to get baby cloth-diapered full-time. Rest well and experiment during your free time until you get your system right. The benefits are well worth the initial efforts. Happy cloth-diapering!

After crawling backwards for more than one month, Baby V finally started crawling forward two weeks ago, at 7 months 1 week old. It is amazing how fast he crawls all over the place once he has mastered the technique. In fact, so fast that he fell from our mattress to the floor, flat on his face. Ever since, he is only allowed to crawl freely on the floor or playpen.

Baby V received a pair of large Tee-Knees™ as a present – perfect timing! (Available at The First Few Years, Paragon, Singapore) (listed price: S$29.90) Although size Large is designed for children aged 12 to 36 months, it fits his thunder thighs well and he looks as if he is going to roller-blade.

It is very easy to put Tee-Knees™ onto Baby V. I like the softness of the Neoprene pads and Spandex leg bands, which protect his knees while he cheerfully explores his bedroom.

Without Tee-Knees™, his knees would be burning red and his skin almost peeling after much crawling. The Tee-Knees™ do slide down a little sometimes.

The drawstring pouch is a great idea as it ensures that the Tee-Knees™ stay as a pair, either at home or in the diaper bag.

Soft and comfortable material

After a month of bending over to change Baby V in his cot, my husband and I were feeling the strain on our backs. I spent an afternoon on Google searching for baby changing tables / stations available in Kuala Lumpur and finally decided on MY DEAR Changing Table with Bath Tub, bought from BabyJaya.

The height is just right for changing Baby V, putting an immediate stop to our back-strain. The various compartments and a side mesh bag are roomy enough for Baby V’s cloth diapers, cloth wipes, pyjamas, water flask and small tubs. It is also convenient to wheel the entire station from the bedroom to just outside the bathroom during bath-time.

We should have bought this earlier!

Pros:

Correct height for changing baby

Safety belt keeps squirming baby from rolling over

Padded top is comfortable for baby

Roomy compartments

Portable

Cons:

I did not find the bath tub useful (I prefer a standalone bath tub.)

Wheels cannot rotate easily

As a first-time mummy, I was paranoid about the baby sliding off my arms when I bathed him, so I wanted a bath tub that ensured safety. After shopping around, I decided on The First Years Newborn-to-Toddler Bath Tub, which is one of my best buys for Baby V. Mine is the previous version with a green mesh sling, bought when it was steeply discounted at Isetan (in Kuala Lumpur).

The bath tub’s sling allows my hands to be free when bathing Baby V. Therefore, it is a breeze to add more water or grab the towel, even when he was a newborn. The clever design makes bathing baby a much safer, calmer and enjoyable experience. No wonder Baby V loves his daily bath!

Even my confinement lady commented the bath tub and recommended it to a friend with a preemie baby.

Pros:

Keeps hands free to reach for things when baby is having a bath

Comfortable padded head-rest

Newborn lies comfortably in sling when bathing

Safe — older baby can sit in tub without sliding down

Cons:

Small crevices that need a good scrub every now and then

—

During my pregnancy, I received a small tube of Bepanthen Ointment in a goodie bag. I tried a larger tube on Baby V since it is free from colourant, fragrance and preservative.

As Baby V is on cloth diapers, he only has minor rashes when poo is left on his diaper for too long. These are usually cleared up within a day by the ointment. As a precaution, I apply a thin layer of ointment on him at every diaper change.

It has worked well for him and does not affect the absorbency of his cloth diapers.

Pros:

Prevents nappy rashes

Clears any rash relatively quickly

Cloth diaper-friendly

Cons:

50g tube is too big and messy; I prefer the 30g tube.

Leaves a greyish stain on his cloth diapers

I almost exclusively use Buds products on Baby V’s skin since they are do not contain harmful preservatives and are PEG-free. Recently, a new range of organic products has been launched.

Baby V’s scalp has been bothered by cradle cap. Even though I have removed them using Buds Baby Oil, the condition recurred after a few days and Baby V’s scalp looked very dry.

Then I came across Buds Cradle Cap Cleansing Lotion at Chubby Chubby, Desa Parkcity. Since Buds is one of my trusted brands, I decided to give it a try even though the small bottle costs RM39.90.

After clearing the cradle cap using Buds Baby Oil, I applied a small amount of the lotion (using cotton wool) in a circular motion on Baby V’s scalp and washed off the excess with water. (This step replaces shampooing the cradle cap area since shampoo tends to dry the scalp.) I shampooed the rest of his head using Buds Head-to-Toe Bath Wash for Newborns as usual.

Voila! Baby V’s scalp was very moisturised after the wash and the cradle cap returned only after about 2 weeks, affecting a much smaller area. I removed it using Buds Baby Oil again and continued to use Buds Cradle Cap Cleansing Lotion in his front scalp in replacement of shampoo and the cradle cap has not returned since.

I am very satisfied with the results and would recommend this new product to babies affected by cradle cap.

Pros:

Organic content

Lives up to its name as a solution for cradle cap

Cons: Cannot think of any

—

Get Your Own: This lotion is available at major baby stores, departmental stores and baby-mel.com.
