Stylish Mum’s Essentials item #5 is weehuggers Wet Bag – Hobo Bag, retailed at one of my favourite stores, Whoopeekiddies (now known as Milagro Trading). Even before this article, I’ve been Whoopeekiddies’ regular customer, buying cloth diapers and even personal care products from there.

The weehuggers Wet Bag is a smartly-designed bag with an integrated wet bag compartment to hold wet or soiled baby items. Certainly a dream bag for cloth diapering mums! Even if you aren’t cloth diapering baby, this bag eliminates the need to bring plastic or ziploc bags to hold baby’s dirty clothes, bibs, etc.

This multi-purpose bag in a cheerful designer print has become my grab-and-go diaper bag for more than 4 months. I’m so000 grateful that Yee Ling from Whoopeekiddies sent me one for a review.

What is a Wet Bag?

Just in case you’re new to this, a wet bag is a cloth bag with a zip closure and waterproof inner lining. It was originally designed to hold wet or soiled cloth diapers when Mummy and baby are on the go. Since its invention by the cloth diapering industry, Mums have found a trillion uses for wet bags, limited only by your own imagination. Read some of the popular uses here.

About weehuggers™ Wet Bag

The brand, weehuggers, is owned by Blueberry diapers, which is famous for its minky cloth diapers. These are the main features of the wet bag:

Outer layer: Designer cotton fabric

Inner lining: Waterproof PUL (polyurethan laminate)

Handle: Yes

Dimensions: 16″ x 14″ x 3″

Capacity: Up to 10 wet diapers

Country of origin: Made in the U.S.A.; wee-be-gone™ patches made in Japan.

There’s a larger version called weehuggers™ Laundry Bag. Both are available in 8 designer prints.

First Impressions

The bag is very pretty and does not look like wet bag at all. Who’d have guessed that it’s one?!?

There are 2 zippered compartments — the larger one is for wet stuff, the smaller one for dry stuff. Within the wet bag compartment is a unique wee-be-gone™ patch, which is supposed to “absorb the organic compound Trimethylamine – an ammonia-like gas present in soiled diapers”.

The bag is generally well-made, except for some loose threads inside 1 of the zips. Such threads risk jamming the zip, so I promptly trimmed them off.

How We Tested It

(a) Laundry: I handwashed it in cold before first use. After that, I flip the wet compartment inside out and throw it into the washing machine with Vee’s usual laundry, whenever needed. Ever since this wet bag became my staple grab-and-go diaper bag, I minimise washings needed by putting a wet bag into the wet compartment. Crazy, right?

(b) Capacity: This wet bag was tested heavily during our 1-week trip in Perth. Instead of lugging my gigantic LeSportsac diaper bag around, I used the weehuggers wet bag as a compact diaper bag.

It contained a full day’s travelling needs — 5 cloth diapers with extra disposable inserts, a few cloth wipes, a packet of wet wipes, an extra set of clothes, and a travel diaper mat clutch. Wet cloth diapers are bulkier and get squeezed into the wet compartment. At the end of the day, the wet diapers are empty into a large travelling wet bag or diaper pail.

Nowadays, I store 2 cloth diapers, several cloth wipes, a packet of wet wipes, an extra set of clothes and a travelling placemat in the bag. Anytime we’ve a short errand to run or to attend Vee’s Shichida classes, I simply grab the hobo bag plus my small handbag, and we’re ready to leave. With the wet compartment, it’s perfectly ok to forget to bring a wet bag along. Oh… how I love this!

Stylish Mum’s Tip: Carrying a diaper bag separate from your handbag makes it easier to change handbags to match your outfit for the day. It also means you can leave the heavier diaper bag lying around without the risk of losing your valuables. A small handbag also looks more elegant than a bigger one.

(c) Performance: So far, dampness is well-contained within the wet compartment. The wee-be-gone patch seems to do its job of absorbing odors, even after a day of travelling with wet diapers in it. I didn’t have the chance to test it with poopy diapers because Vee has been pooing into the toilet / potty since 10 months old.

(d) Overall Value: The usual price of a weehuggers Wet Bag is S$46, and it’s now at 15% off (S$39.10), which is a real steal, considering this dual-functions as a compact and stylish diaper bag. I’ve been using the weehuggers Wet Bag for more than 4 months and wish it’d never ever wear out…

—

What we like about it:

Very pretty — I love designer prints!

Doubles up as a compact diaper bag (or multi-purpose bag for gym or swimming)

Machine washable for easy maintenance

What can be improved:

Trim away loose threads after sewing the bag

Hide laundry instructions inside bag for a more elegant look

It’s indeed large and fabulous, doubling up as a diaper pail liner!

About Bummis Large Fabulous Wet Bag

These are the main features of the wet bag:

Material: 1 layer of laminated polyester (same as Super Brite diaper cover), guaranteed lead, phthalate and BPA free

Closures: Pull-strings AND zipper

Dimensions: ~ 23″ x 23″ (58cm x 58cm)

Country of origin: Made in Montreal (Canada)

The Large Fabulous Wet Bag is EXCLUSIVE to Bummis Organic Cotton Diaper Kit. Small and medium Fabulous Wet Bags are available, featuring a snap-able handle and a zipper.

First Impressions

This is the LARGEST wet bag I have seen! I was totally blown over when I first opened it up. It fits nicely into my existing dry diaper pail, with ample excess fabric. I like the choice of closing it with either pull-strings or a zipper and was eager to test it out during our 1-week Perth trip, with an aim to cloth-diaper Vee as much as possible!

Moreover, it’s in the same familiar Bummis Super Brite print, which livens up Vee’s room.

How We Tested It

(a) Prewash & Laundry: As with any new laundry items, I handwashed it in cold water once before initial use. After that, it’s very easy to wash and dry after use. The laminate has withstood more than 2 months of regular use, and looks as good as new.

(b) Effectiveness: During our 1-week trip to Perth, my plan was to cloth-diaper Vee whenever possible, so we chose a service apartment with a washing machine and dryer. I hung the pull-strings on a door knob to use it as a hanging laundry bag. When doing so, it was difficult to use the zip, so I fastened the pull-strings each time after dumping a cloth diaper or soiled laundry in. It has a HUGE capacity and can hold 1-2 days’ worth of cloth diapers.

It’s very sturdy and is currently my preferred diaper pail liner.

(e) Overall value: There is NO price for this Large Fabulous Wet Bag because it’s available exclusively in Bummis Organic Cloth Diaper Kits. Being somewhat of a mathematical freak, I derived the value of the wet bag by taking the price of the diaper kit and subtracting the total value of all the other items in the kit.

Value of 1 Large Fabulous Wet Bag in:

Infant Diaper Kit: S$19.80 (what a steal!)

Baby Diaper Kit: S$42.50 (still reasonable, considering the bag is so big)

Infant & Baby Diaper Kits: S$16.65 (great to have 2 diaper pail liners to rotate!)

—

What we like about it:

Very generous size

Doubles up as a diaper pail liner

Option of using pull-strings or zipper to enclose it

Easy to wash and dry

What can be improved:

Offer it for individual sale!

—

My Opinion on Bummis Diaper Kits

Getting a Bummis Diaper Kit is a convenient way to have the complete diapering system in place — diaper covers, prefolds, liners and wet bag (cum diaper pail liner). Before Vee was born, I was shopping all over the place for the various items. The number of items included in each diaper kit is reasonable for starting a stash.

Personally, I prefer to have more Infant-sized than Baby-sized prefolds (because they’re slimmer and more versatile) and find diaper covers a MUST for my newborn baby. Most newborns don’t fit into one-size cloth diapers until they’re 5kg, about 2-3 months old. At the newborn stage, the prefold + diaper cover system is economical since soooo many diaper changes are needed. (FYI: Vee’s highest record was 11 poos in ONE day, right after the confinement lady left. I nearly freaked out!)

Conclusion: if I were to choose right at the start, the Infant Diaper Kit would attract me more.

Welcome to Part 3 of Mummy’s Reviews™’ Bummis Review Series! Tiny Pants provided me with both washable Fleece Liners and flushable Bio-Soft Liners to test out on Vee. Previously, we only had 3 washable fleece liners and had to use conventional disposable liners at times. I certainly welcome more fleece liners and like the idea of biodegradable liners.

What is a Diaper Liner?

Traditional cloth diapers (for e.g. square nappies) don’t have a stay-dry layer, so a diaper liner may be placed on them to wick moisture away from baby’s skin. It’s usually a thin layer and comes in disposable or washable types.

These are situations when diaper liners are useful:

Provide a stay-dry surface on cloth diapers without one (e.g. cotton, bamboo diapers), especially for long hours or night-time use

Prevent stool stains on cloth diapers, especially for newborn’s meconium or diarrhoea

Prevent diaper cream from coating cloth diapers, thus avoiding build-up issues

Ease removal of stool from cloth diapers (A flushable diaper liner allows stool to be disposed into the toilet easily. Note: Stool should go into the toilet, not into the garbage bin.)

When a disposable diaper needs to be used (for e.g. during travel), you may lay a washable diaper liner to protect baby’s skin from touching the disposable diaper

During travel, you may lay a liner onto a pocket diaper. During diaper change, simply replace the insert and liner, and reuse the pocket diaper. This converts the pocket diaper into an AI2 (All-in-Two)!

About Bummis Diaper Liners

These are the main features of the Fleece Liners:

Material: Repreve “more than recycled” polyester, guaranteed lead, phthalate and BPA free

Dimensions: 11″ x 4.75″ (28cm x 12cm)

Country of origin: Made in Canada

These are the main features of the Bio-Soft Liners:

Material: 100% viscose rayon, a cellulosic fibre derived from natural sources

Dimensions: Baby-sized (Large): 11.25″ x 8″ (28.5cm x 20.5cm)

Country of origin: Made in England

Bummis’ website states that the “Bio-Soft liners are made of a non woven material with no binder, and will biodegrade very quickly (within 8 days in a sewage treatment system or 20 days in a septic tank).” A smaller Infant-sized is also available.

First Impressions

The Bio-Soft Liners come in a roll, and can be torn off for use, just like disposable kitchen towels. After removing the plastic packaging, I’d to keep the roll of liners in a zipper bag. Each liner is thin like tissue paper, soft and smooth.

Update on 1 March 2011: Tiny Pants updated me that the packaging can be opened from the top, then pull out the liners easily. I’ve been trying it out for a while and it works wonderfully:

The Fleece Liners are relatively thin, and also feel soft and smooth. This is what they look like:

A closer look at the materials:

How to Use The Liners

Fleece Liner: Simply lay onto any cloth diaper that requires wicking or protection.

Bio-Liner: Bummis’ website doesn’t mention anything about it wicking moisture. The main function seems to be facilitating poo removal. So, lay onto a cloth diaper that requires protection. For wicking moisture, you’d still need a stay-dry diaper or washable liner.

How We Tested Them

(a) Prewash & Laundry: The Fleece Liners “fluffed’ up a little after several washes, without any pilling. As expected, Vee’s diaper cream left a faint greyish stain on the liners. Our diaper cream is rather cloth-diaper friendly, so I wash the fleece liners with other diapering items. If unsure about your diaper cream, you’d need to wash the fleece liners separately, and strip wash them occasionally.

(b) Comfort: The Fleece Liners wick moisture away rather well, feeling only a little damp. I like its softness against Vee’s skin.

The Bio-Liners don’t seem to wick away moisture as they feel quite damp when used with prefolds. So, when using prefolds, you may wish to use place the Bio-Liner ON the Fleece Liner.

When used stay-dry diapers (such as inner layer made of suedecloth or microfleece), they feel drier. They’re rather dry on bamboo velour too. I use them when Vee needs diaper cream and all the fleece liners are in the wash.

(c) Ease of Use: The Fleece Liners are of the right size and don’t require any folding.

The Bio-Liners can be folded across the width to suit the diaper. Since it’s very thin, I like that it’s wide enough for folding to get 2 layers. This protects the diaper well against diaper cream.

Since my home sewage system is very old, I didn’t dare to flush them down the toilet. Anyway, Vee’s potty-trained for poo, so the liners are only wet. I simply dispose the used liners into the garbage bin. Even before Vee was poo-trained, I find it easy to spray or dump poo into the toilet, without using any liner.

During our 1-week trip to Perth, both liners were very useful in converting my pocket diapers into AI2s. I brought only several pocket diapers for the trip, and managed to cloth-diaper Vee almost full-time in the day!

At home, fleece liners allow us to use prefolds for a longer period of time, up to 2-3 hours (with a Bummis diaper cover). Since Vee’s a heavy-wetter with super-sensitive skin, either liner isn’t stay-dry enough for 12 hours of overnight use. They’re more suited for his day-time use. Other babies may be fine with them though, so you’d need to try to find out.

(e) Overall value: The price of 5 Fleece Liners is SGD8.90 (~USD7 or RM21) — absolutely value-for-money. A roll of 100 Baby-sized Bio-Soft Liners is SGD12.90 (~USD10 or RM31). Since Vee’s poo-trained, we don’t get as much use out of them. They’d be more useful on a younger baby (especially when expecting a BIG poo outdoors) and better if they wicked moisture away from the cotton prefolds.

Stay tuned for the upcoming review in this Bummis Series: Bummis Fabulous Wet Bag & a BIG GIVEAWAY!

—

Fleece Liners

What we like about them:

Just the right size

Very green — made of recycled polyester, even the packaging is made of chlorine free recycled fibres

Good quality at a very affordable price

What can be improved:

Even more stay-dry for baby with super-sensitive skin (Erm… am I asking too much?)

—

Bio-Soft Liners

What we like about them:

Baby-sized: wide enough to be folded as needed, to provide 2 layers of protection (especially against diaper cream)

Biodegradable in a short time

Some parents like that the liners are flushable, which facilitate easy poo removal

What can be improved:

Wick moisture away from cotton prefolds

Note: We didn’t get to try the liners with poo and didn’t flush them down the toilet.

Welcome to Part 2 of Stylish Mum’s Essentials series! Spinkie gave me the opportunity to review The Pat-a-Cake Wet Bag, which is the perfect match to The Pat-a-Cake Baby Blanket in the same Alexander Henry’s popular “Juicy Jungle” print. In case you’re new to Mummy’s Reviews™, read the many uses of wet bags and why I never have enough of them here.

About The Pat-a-Cake Wet Bag

These are the main features of the wet bag:

Outer layer: Made of printed cotton fabric

Inner layer: Made of waterproof ProCare fabric

Loop handle: Yes, with snap button

Dimensions: (Large) About 14.5″ x 14.5″

Capacity: 4 to 6 cloth diapers (Actual test: up to 8 cloth diapers)

Country of origin: Made in the U.S.A.

The wet bags are available in 2 sizes (small or large), and a range of lovely designer prints.

First Impressions

The wet bag is beautiful, big and roomy. I like the snap handle, which means it’d be easy to attach it to the stroller, diaper bag or virtually anywhere convenient.

The is the first time that I try a wet bag with ProCare as waterproof barrier. ProCare feels thicker than polyurethane-laminated (PUL) fabric. It also gives off an odd smell, which is common with new plastic items. Suddenly, a thought ran through my mind, “Please don’t let this contain PVC!” If it contains PVC, I wouldn’t use it (see note at the bottom).

As a cautious Mummy, I did a search on ProCare. Wazoodle says that it contains 25% polyester and 75% vinyl. It is a proprietary formulation that does not contain DEHP, Phlalates or BPA plasticizers. Furthermore, the barrier fabric comparison page mentions that ProCare is of higher duty than PUL and can withstand more washes. This convinces me that ProCare is a safe fabric to use and puts my mind at ease. Phew!

How We Tested It

Laundry: Before initial use, I handwashed it once. I didn’t like the lingering odd plasticky smell, so aired it by the window for 2 days. After another wash, the smell finally disappeared.

Performance: During our recent trip to Perth, this became our spare wet bag in the diaper bag, since we went out every day for a week. It’s thicker than my usual PUL wet bag, so takes up a little more space in the diaper bag. But that’s a marginal difference.

It’s very spacious, and can actually hold up to 8 medium and large cloth diapers, instead of 4 to 6 as described. As what wet bags should do, it successfully keeps dampness and smell in.

Each large wet bag is USD25, while the small version is USD18. This is reasonable as it comes in attractive designer prints, quality fabrics and excellent workmanship, the same qualities found in The Pat-a-Cake Baby Blanket. For a short trip, it is pretty enough to hang on its own by the stroller. And yes, your fashionista girl-friend would definitely love it as a baby shower gift.

—

What we like about it:

Loop handle with snap button for attaching to anywhere convenient

Durable ProCare fabric that can last many washes

Beautiful print that livens up the nursery or stroller

Machine-washable for easy maintenance

What can be improved:

Specify content of fabrics used

Air the ProCare fabric beforehand to remove the odd smell

—

I bought this Wahmies Fun Prints Wet Bag (All Day) in Angel Bears print from Babe Hause during a clearance sale. Since then, this portable laundry bag has accompanied us to every out-of-town and overseas trip.

About Wahmies Fun Prints Wet Bag (All Day)

These are the main features of the wet bag:

Outer layer: Printed fabric

Inner layer: Waterproof polyurethane laminated (PUL) fabric

Loop handle: Yes

Extra: Sewn in 2.5″x5″ pad of hemp french terry or hemp fleece (You may place a few drops of essential oil to help control odour.)

Dimensions: Approximately 16″ (width) x 20″ (height)

Capacity: Up to 1 day of laundry

Country of origin: Made in the U.S.A.

There are many beautiful prints to choose from.

First Impressions

Angel Bears isn’t my ideal type of print. I’d prefer something brighter and more cheerful. Since this was the only design left on clearance, I bought it.

The little piece of fabric wasn’t sewn onto my wet bag. I am not bothered by this as I don’t use essential oil anyway. Perhaps this is the reason for its clearance.

Our Experience Using It

Laundry: It has stood up to washes after 1 year of use and still look as good as the day I received it.

Performance: I use it to store Vee’s dirty laundry and cloth diapers in the hotel room or my mum’s place. It can be hooked behind the door, on the door knob or anywhere convenient. The capacity is big enough to hold 1 day’s worth of laundry. The waterproof PUL layer keeps any dampness in, while the zip prevents odour from escaping.

When my Medium wet bag is in the wash, I’d put this large wet bag in the diaper bag. It is rather compact after folding.

The retail price of this wet bag is USD18.50, while I bought it at RM55 (about USD17.70). The lasting quality is worth the price.

—

What we like about it:

High quality fabrics and materials that last through many washes

Loop handle for hooking onto anywhere convenient

What can be improved:

The little piece of fabric wasn’t sewn onto my wet bag.

After 18 months, most of Vee’s original stash of low-cost cotton washcloths have been stained (by food) or torn at the hems. They are small and slightly rough, which aren’t gentle enough for Vee’s eczema-prone face. He has 18 cloth wipes for his bums and 3 for baths, yet none for his delicate face. Just in time, I received a set of two organic bamboo cloth wipes from baby-mel.com to review.

What are Modern Cloth Wipes?

Modern cloth wipes are quite different from the washcloths commonly seen in baby stores. They are usually made from premium quality fabrics that last through many washes. Fabrics such as cotton sherpa terry and bamboo velour are able to grab messes well, so are great for wiping food-smeared faces after meals or cleaning up the messiest poopy bums. When baby has a runny nose (*touch wood*), using soft cloth wipes are much kinder to the skin than bleached tissue paper or chemical-laden disposable wipes.

About Angel Mel Organic Bamboo Baby Wipes

These are the main features of the wipes:

Upper layer: 100% cotton flannel

Lower layer: 100% certified organic bamboo velour

Country of origin: Made in U.S.A.

The wipes are available in Plain, Gender Neutral, Boy and Girl prints.

First Impressions

As a fan of origami, I like that the wipes are creatively folded into shirts. This would be a practical and pretty door gift for events or parties. The wipes are sooooo… soft and smooth; I simply love bamboo velour!

How We Tested It

Laundry: The laundry instructions state “machine wash 30°C”, “do not tumble dry” and “hand wash with warm soap water”. I actually took the risk and broke ALL three laundry “rules”. Occasionally, I handwash the wipes with cold water. Usually, I put them into a laundry net and machine-wash them at 40°C with tumble drying at high speed, together with the daily load of clothes and cloth diapers. After a month, they still remain soft and smooth. Phew!

Effectiveness: Vee has eczema-prone skin, especially on his chin and cheeks. Therefore, we need to wipe his mouth very regularly and thoroughly. I’m sure you know how babies eat — cereal, rice, milk, yoghurt, bananas, etc. smeared all over the face, especially when they insist on feeding themselves. The bamboo velour side of the wipe grabs the mess well while being ultra-gentle on the skin.

The price of a set of two wipes is RM19.90 (~USD6 or SGD9). Since it is on the high side (expected of organic fabrics), I’d suggest using them exclusively for the face or as gifts, instead of the bums.

—

What we like about it:

Fabric remains soft and smooth even after 1 month of regular washing

Grabs food messes well

Machine washable

Available in cute prints

Attractive packaging makes it a presentable gift

What can be improved:

Allow choice of specific prints since I prefer using different prints according to purpose or family member

—

Wet bags are a must-have for EVERY diaper bag. If “wet bag” is totally an alien term to you or sounds something like a bag accidentally dropped onto a puddle of water, then please read on:

What is a Wet Bag?

A wet bag is a cloth bag with a zip closure and waterproof inner lining. It was originally designed to hold wet or soiled cloth diapers when Mummy and baby are on the go. There are various sizes to suit different needs. Since its invention by the cloth-diapering industry, Mums have found a trillion uses for wet bags, limited by only your own imagination:

for the poopy / pukey newborn: hold wet/soiled cloth diapers, bibs, handkerchiefs, clothes, etc.

for the messy eater: hold cutlery, utensils, boxes of snacks, spare bibs, etc. After a messy meal, dump everything back into the wet bag.

for the water baby: hold wet swimwear and towels after a dip in the pool

for the toddler in daycare: hold a spare change of clothes. After bathing and changing, keep used clothes in wet bag.

for the young Picasso: hold used painting accessories after enrichment activity

for the grandchild camping over at Granny’s place: a large wet bag that can be hung at the door knob serves as a travel-size laundry basket

for Mummy: hold soiled cloth pads, cloth wipes, make-up accessories, etc.

Now you’d probably understand why I never have enough wet bags.

About Bouncy Baby Wet Bag

These are the main features of the wet bag:

Single layer: Made of soft and thick breathable polyurethane laminated (PUL) fabric

Loop handle: Yes

Dimensions: Approximately 32cm (length) x 29 (height) x 12cm (base width)

Capacity: Up to 5 of most brands of cloth diapers

Country of origin: Made in Malaysia, in a small dedicated sewing studio

There are 4 solid colours to choose from.

How We Tested It

Laundry: Before initial use, I washed it by hand and there was no colour run. Normal laundry has been easy: To reuse it in a rush, simply give the inner surface a good wipe. Otherwise, flip it inside out and toss into your normal laundry.

Performance: I use the wet bag to hold Vee’s meal-time accessories when dining out. It is very roomy and contains everything needed. The waterproof lining works well in keeping the dampness of his wet handkerchiefs in.

I like the loop handle that makes holding easy. Often at home, I need to carry Vee up/down the stairs while grabbing a few dirty handkerchiefs and a cup for washing. Instead of using a baby carrier, I could also dump the messy stuff into the wet bag and still carry Vee.

The capacity is large because of its wide bottom design. The stretchy fabric means you can stuff it like a dumpling.

Stretchy wet bag that holds loads of stuff

The price of a Bouncy Baby Wet Bag is RM27 (~USD8 or SGD12). A similar-sized wet bag imported from the U.S. could cost twice as much.

—

What we like about it:

Wide bottom provides large capacity

Stretchy fabric allows stuffing to the max

Simple one layer design

Loop handle eases holding it

What can be improved:

Introduce more colours and prints

After bouncing back from a MEGA flu with fever hitting 38.5 degree Celsius, I am finally able to publish this Review & Giveaway article on Bouncy Baby One Size Cloth Diaper and Wet Bag– designed by the team at Tiny Tapir. Vee and I have tested the diaper over almost 2 months and we like that it is made of high quality materials, good workmanship and the introductory prices are jaw-droppingly LOW!

What is a One-Size Diaper?

(This short section is for mums new to cloth-diapering.) A one-size diaper means it comes in only one size (i.e. no XS, S, M, L or XL). It usually fits babies well from 3 to 5kg onwards (depending on the brand) to an average-sized toddler. It is a suitable choice if:

your newborn/toddler is nether too petite nor too huge, or

you plan to have one or two children, or

you are on a tight budget.

About Bouncy Baby One Size HEMP Pocket Diaper

These are the main features of the diaper:

Outer layer: Made of soft and thick breathable polyurethane laminated (PUL) fabric (Up to 300 washes at 40 degree Celsius or below.)

Inner lining: Made of Alova suedecloth

Insert (Large, Hemp): Contains 2 layers of 55% hemp & 45% cotton. When folded: 6 layers of absorbency

Insert (Small, Microfibre): Contains 2 layers of microfibre. Snapped onto hemp insert.

Closures: Diagonal front snaps. 2 rows of 10 waist and thigh snaps. 5 to 6 possible settings.

Country of origin: Made in Malaysia, in a small dedicated sewing studio

The introductory colours are blue and pink, with more to be launched.

First Impressions

I received the review sample during the Mom & Baby Expo at MidValley in May, on the first day of Bouncy Baby’s soft launch. Li from Tiny Tapir described her new diaper with conviction, while coming across as socially responsible and passionate about cloth diapering. I appreciate that she chooses to manufacture the diapers in Malaysia to ensure close supervision and humane treatment of workers.

Both the workmanship of the diaper and the quality of materials used are indeed excellent. It is the first time that I felt Alova suedecloth (the stay-dry layer)– extremely soft and comfortable! This is the most unique point that drew me to test Bouncy Baby out. (Most cloth diapers use suedecloth, microfleece and bamboo. Alova suedecloth is really outstanding!)

The pocket opening has a flap that keeps inserts in place without using elastics.

Pocket opening with flap (keeps inserts in without elastics)

My review sample comes with an extra set of snaps at the thigh, intended to prevent wing droop for newborns. This feature would probably be removed for newer batches.

Thigh snaps originally intended to prevent wing droop for newborns

Bouncy Baby HEMP Pocket comes with a large prefold size hemp insert and a small microfibre insert. Hemp is known for its superb absorbency, while microfibre soaks up liquid very fast. By combining the two (with microfibre layer closer to baby’s bums), the diaper technically becomes a super-soaker.

How We Tested It

Prewash: I prewashed the diaper and inserts with warm water once by hand . The hemp insert is uniquely designed with a large base opening that allows quick drying. Otherwise, hemp inserts could take a few days to dry since they are very absorbent.

Tip #1: Prewash new hemp inserts SEPARATELY from other diaper items to remove its natural oils.

Tip #2: To help hemp achieve its full absorbency faster (i.e. prep it), wash it in WARM/HOT water or boil it once. However, do not boil if it has snaps on it.

Regular Laundry: The diaper has been machine-washed at 60 degree Celsius and still stays as good as new after almost two months. The Alova suedecloth and hemp insert are still soft after many washes.

A significant amount of lint was found inside the hemp insert though. I could not tell if the lint was originally present or caught up from the laundry. Anyway, I removed them and wash the hemp insert in a laundry net subsequently. No more lint has been found in the insert since.

Update on 13 Jul 2010: Part of the PUL has separated after about 30 washes at 60 degree Celsius. The PUL manufacturer just confirmed with Bouncy Baby that the PUL fabric needs to be washed on cold. Bouncy Baby is sourcing for new PUL fabric. Therefore, if you get Bouncy Baby, please note that it is for cold wash (maximum 40 degree Celsius).

Ease of Use / Fit: It took a while to figure out how to use the inserts since the hemp insert is really one-of-a-kind. There are 6 snaps on it, and no instructions provided on the packaging. It is possible to snap it in various combinations to meet the child’s needs (boy / girl / small / medium / large). Hence, I created the step-by-step pictures below to help you understand better how the inserts work.

This is the first time I try putting on a diaper with diagonal front snaps on Vee. There are only 2 snaps per side, which take up little time. He is using the third rise setting and the front of the diaper rests nicely below his tummy. The back elastic is relatively thin, so if the snap settings are tight, there could be red marks on baby. Thicker and gentler elastics would be more ideal.

Trimness: The inserts combination above, with the extra layers of hemp placed in front (for a boy), resulted in a thick bulk below his tummy. Therefore, I would suggest reserving this configuration for naps or night-time only. During the day, I prefer to skip Step 1 for a trimmer diaper.

The diaper with its hemp plus microfibre inserts are designed for night-time cloth-diapering, therefore it is not trim. We use it only at home, so this is acceptable. (Bouncy Baby is also sold with microfibre inserts only, which would be trimmer for day-time use.)

Absorbency: The hemp insert was absorbent for at least 2 hours even after one prewash. We have tried it for up to 4 hours without any leak. When Vee is changed, the inserts are at most 3/4 full, which means they can last even longer. The absorbency is very high, considering Vee is about the heaviest-wetter in town.

Stay-dry: Alova suedecloth stays dry and comfy against baby’s bums, so if your baby is fussy over wet diapers, this is very suitable.

Poo: No ‘luck’ with poo accidents in the diaper as Vee is potty-trained for poo.

I know you’ve been waiting for this… View photos of Vee’s sexy bums below:

The price of a Bouncy Baby One Size Pocket Diaper with hemp and microfibre inserts is RM69.90 (~USD22 or SGD30); introductory prices are at only RM52 (~USD16 or SGD22)! For such quality and functionality, it is absolutely value-for-money.

—

What we like about it:

Alova suedecloth has won my hearts over! Stay-dry, soft and comfortable for baby

Hemp insert is soft and very absorbent, perfect for night-time use

Hemp insert dries fast, thanks to its unique design

Large cutting fits chubby babies well

What can be improved:

Use PUL fabric that can be washed on hot

Provide instructions on how to combine inserts

Thicker and gentler back elastics to prevent red marks

Introduce printed fabrics for fashionista Mums

The Moo Moo Kow™ Cloth Diaper Giveaway is back! This time with luxurious cloth wipes to add to the excitement.

After six months of use, we still love the Moo Moo Kow™ cloth diapers. View the updated review here. Below is my review on the bamboo cloth wipe:

Super-soft cloth wipe that I use on my face outdoors!

First Impressions

It is super-duper-soft and luxurious, thanks to the high bamboo content.

Bottom Bamboo Fleece: 70% Bamboo, 30% Cotton

Top Bamboo Velour: 53% Bamboo, 22% Polyester, 23% Cotton

Since Vee already has a stash of cloth wipes for his bums and another stash for his face, I decided to reserve this off-white bamboo wipe for myself. Finally, my first dedicated cloth wipe!

How I Use It

Since it is creamy white without any cute prints, it suits my style perfectly. I keep it in a cloth pouch in my handbag and use it in replacement of tissue paper to wipe my face, mouth and hands when outdoors. Before handling Vee’s food, I would clean my hands and this comes in useful. Simply spray or pour a little bit of water on it to use it as a wet wipe.

It also acts as a spare handkerchief or bib for Vee when his are used up.

The bamboo cloth wipe is so luxurious that I could not bear to wash it in the washing machine. This is still convenient as I hand-wash a set of undergarments and cloth pantiliner every day anyway.

—

What I like about it (i.e. the cloth wipe):

Super soft and luxurious, even after several washes

Cream colour is suitable for adult’s use (Erm… quite awkward to whip out a cutey cloth wipe in front of a business associate)

Generous size provides a good wipe (especially for the hands)

What can be improved:

None for my case (though some Mums may want cute prints for their babies’ use)

—

I am also paranoid about exposing him to bleach, chlorine, dioxin, etc. from common disposable diapers. Cloth diaper inserts need about one sunny day to dry, and there would be no space in hotel rooms to hang them. Using hotel laundry services would be expensive and I think only cloth-diapering mums know the proper way to laundry diapers.

The Solution

I google-ed around for a solution and voila… stumbled upon disposable inserts! Three common brands are:

gRefills (by gDiapers)

Gro Baby Bio Soakers

Flip One-Size Disposable Inserts

After comparing reviews, prices and availability, I bought a pack of 18 Flip One-Size Disposable Inserts from Whoopeekiddies to try. (Usual price: S$7.50; special offer: S$6 including postage) The delivery was very fast, and I love shopping from Whoopeekiddies.

Why I Bought Flip One-Size Disposable Inserts

They simply replace regular diaper inserts, are dye free, fragrance free, and are made of only non-woven bamboo viscose, filler, wood pulp, SAP, and starch-based glue. (I like that the SAP content is low.) The price of S$0.42 (during promotion: S$0.33) per insert is also reasaonable.

First Impressions

Each insert looks like… erm… a maxi pad. It is trim and long — covers the whole of Knickernappies 2G Large.

Simply lay insert on a cloth diaper

How We Tested Them

The inserts have been tried with:

Drybees (Medium) — no adjustable rise, scrunched up a little, fine for 1.5 hrs when changed

Moo Moo Kow — on lowest rise, usually maximum rise, fine for 3 hrs when changed

Happy Heinys — on lowest rise, usually second rise, fine for 2 hrs when changed

Poo was well contained and could be easily rolled off the insert into the toilet before disposing the insert. (Yes, poop belongs to the sewage system instead of the dustbin.)

After the experiments, these steps work best:

lay a fresh insert ON a cloth diaper with adjustable rise (such as Moo Moo Kow or Happy Heinys)

adjust the rise setting to 1 to 2 snaps SHORTER than usual (ensure a snug fit)

if the insert is too long, fold it a bit at the front or back

put the diaper on baby and he is ready to go

With a smaller rise setting, the insert is kept in place and can perform its job well.

Over one entire day outdoor, Vee needed only 2 pocket diapers to rotate and reuse, and 4 disposable inserts. For Vee, each insert could last up to 3 to 4 hours, when he would be changed. It would take little time to hand-wash and dry two pocket diapers in the hotel each day.

With the hybrid system (cloth diaper and disposable insert), most of Vee’s bums and waist are covered by cloth. The inserts have been gentle on Vee’s sensitive skin, and I am very relieved.

Flip disposable inserts can be used together for higher absorbency, which is essential during nights. (We have yet to test them out for night-time. Vee is a persistent-night-nurser-cum-super-heavy-wetter, and I am not ready to sacrifice previous sleep yet!)

Overall, I am very satisfied with these inserts and would be stocking them for our trip. While placing an order, I was informed that these are out of stock at Whoopeekiddies. A new version of wider inserts would be shipped and I hope to lay my hands on them!

How do you diaper your little ones when travelling overseas? Any tips to share?

—

What we like about them:

Trim

Long enough for Large diapers

Made of materials gentle to baby’s skin — no bleach / dye / fragrance, and little SAP

Absorbent

Stay-dry surface

Work with existing stash of one-size diapers

No pungent smell with urine

Can be combined for higher absorbency

What can be improved:

Scrunched up a little in front (Tip: use with one-size diaper and smaller setting on rise)

A little fibre stuck to genital

For a greener effect, I would prefer fully biodegradable inserts

Offer an option of larger packs (e.g. 30) for cost savings

—

Update on 22 Dec 2010: A new and longer version of Flip disposable inserts is now available. We used it for one week in Perth and love it!
