3 Exciting Events: Disney On Ice, Melissa & Doug Toys, Cloth Diapers Sale

After 1 long month of rest, I’m finally back to writing.

November passed by in a blur as I was unwell and lethargic. Blood pressure plummeted to as low as 89/50, and all I wanted to do was lie down day and night. Even a simple task like washing vegetables for 10 minutes exhausted me. So all writing halted. Then I went through a medical procedure 2 days ago, and am finally regaining my energy again.

Gosh… I miss taking proper care of Vee, writing, and online shopping! I’m soooo glad to be healthy again!

It’s 1 Dec 2010, my first day of being well, and there are already 3 exciting events to share with you:

1. Disney On Ice 2011

For the past 10+ years, I’ve always wanted to watch Disney On Ice in Singapore, but never made it to one. The grace displayed by ice-skaters is simply mesmerising. Today, the tickets for next year’s show in Kuala Lumpur are on sale and immediately I grabbed a pair of VIP tickets. They cost a small bomb, but Vee gets to enter for FREE (since he’d still be under 3 years old, for the last time next year).

Title: Worlds of Fantasy

Dates: 1 to 3 April 2011

Venue: Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (I couldn’t find any information if the show would be held in Singapore too.)

Where to buy tickets: Ticketpro (online or its outlets) (Buying online means reaching 2 hours in advance to collect tickets, so I bought at an outlet instead.)

Discounts: 10% for early birds, 15% for Toys “R” Us Star members

I certainly look forward to enjoying our first show with Vee.

2. TONNES of Melissa & Doug Toys at ThinkToys

While on the way to grabbing the Disney on Ice tickets, I passed by ThinkToys store (previously ELC), which is finally re-stocked with toys instead of the 50% clearance sale that has been going on for way toooo long.

And taadaa…! I was overwhelmed with shelves and shelves of Melissa & Doug puzzles and toys, which arrived yesterday. This is the LARGEST range of Melissa & Doug toys I’ve seen in KL. Previously, only Toy “R” Us carried a small collection.

Hubby nearly had to drag me out of the store. Before he did that, I grabbed a box of wooden cutting food for him to settle the bill. Vee loves pretend cooking and we seriously need some pretend food. I’ll definitely be back to grab more stuff.

3. Cloth Diapers Sale at eZ Motherhood

From 1 to 31 Dec 2010, eZ Motherhood is holding a sale on cloth diapers and baby accessories. I’ve checked out the prices, which look attractive indeed.

This is my chance to upgrade Vee’s Dancing Bears Night Weight Fleece Soakers to Large, before his Medium ones start bursting at the seams. These fleece shorts provide a 12-hour bulletproof and breathable cover over his fitted diapers at night. eZ Motherhood is the ONLY store in Singapore and Malaysia to retail them. Previously, they were out of stock and I’d to ship 3 pieces directly from the U.S.A., which cost a lot more. (Side note regarding the colours: Aztec Purple & Navy shed lots of lint, while Loden Green washes wonderfully.)

My next tasks are to wrap up the super-overdue Giveaways (#12, #13, #14). Thank you to everyone for your patience with me for the past month. Happy year-end shopping!

Review: Radiant Skin at The Aesthetics Clinic [Mother’s Day Feature]

To celebrate Mummy’s Reviews™’ first Mother’s Day, this review article is dedicated to all Mummies — a break from the usual review of toys, cloth diapers and other baby essentials. After having a baby, it is amazing how often we shop for him and not for ourselves. The pampering sessions of manicure / pedicure, facial treatments and massage (remember preparing for wedding day?) have been squashed out of our calendars. I aim to be a Mummy (and wife) well-maintained in all major beauty departments — skin, hair and body.

When Dr. Dana Elliott Srither of The Aesthetics Clinic (Singapore) offered me a laser treatment for review, I was overwhelmed! I had done only ONE facial treatment ever since Vee was born 14 months ago. I seriously needed this laser treatment meant to reduce mild acne scarring, open pores and for overall skin rejuvenation.

As the ever cautious Mummy, I made some clarifications with Dr. Dana over e-mail:

MieVee: My skin is dry and sensitive (history of hand eczema). Is the laser treatment appropriate?

Dr. Dana: The laser treatment will be done on your face. Most eczema lesions are over the limbs, so if you do not have any on your face, it is fine. I will have to start at a low safe level anyway, which is my safety protocol.

MieVee: How long would the treatment and visit take?

Dr. Dana: The treatment will take not more than 1 hour, from stepping into the clinic to leaving.

MieVee: What are the common effects on the skin after treatment? (E.g. peeling, redness) What is the recovery time needed, if any? (I need to take a flight back to KL on the following day)

Dr. Dana: Slight redness (of course depending on the level of intensity I choose). No peeling seen, but because the laser is slightly exfoliative (helps to get rid of dead skin layers), redness tends to last till that night, or latest the day after. Your treatment will be the safe low intensity.

My First Laser Treatment

I arranged for the appointment to match our recent Singapore trip, left Vee in my Mum’s care while I sneaked out for a pampering session. The clinic’s branch at Bukit Batok Civil Service Club is surrounded by lush greenery and it felt like going to a spa resort. Immediately, my mind was tuned to vacation mode. Fe, the service staff, was very polite and made me feel welcomed. She cleansed my face and applied numbing cream on it. The numbing effect was apparent after 5 to 10 minutes.

Dr. Dana gave me a short presentation comparing four treatments available to solve skin issues — chemical peel, Q-Switch, Erbium and Fractional CO2. In general, the higher the treatment intensity, the larger potential benefits offered. His treatment protocol is to start at a low safe level.

After I signed a consent form, my eyes were covered and Dr. Dana started with one round of Q-Switch laser. As I have loads of facial hair, there were countless sparks and I could even smell the burnt hair! (Dr. Dana must have witnessed a mini National Day fireworks display.) The area around the nose and lips were more sensitive, yet it was nearly painless.

He then proceeded with one round of Erbium laser, which felt warmer and still almost pain-free. (By the way, I have a sky-high pain threshold — think: birth contractions for 27 hours without ANY painkiller/gas.) Anyway, compared to facial treatments where the beautician squeezes out blackheads till you cry, this pales in comparison.

After the laser treatment, Fe applied a cooling mask on my face, followed by moisturizing serum and sunblock.

Observations After The Treatment

My cheeks turned rosy (not very red) and the skin felt a bit taut. On the same evening, I brought Vee to a play-date and my good friend did not mention anything about my face. This seems like no downtime at all. Over the following few days, I diligently applied moisturiser and sunscreen lotion even at home. Powder make-up was easily applied onto my face on day 4 and I was pleased to look beautiful again.

Conclusion

Erbium laser exfoliated my skin effectively in just a short time. It is a very time- and cost-efficient way of maintaining youthful complexion and I am looking forward to my next laser treatment!

Shop Review: Babe Hause

At the beginning of my cloth-diapering journey, I decided on using Drybees Pocket Diapers and searched for retailers in Singapore and Malaysia. Babe Hause offered an attractive Newborn Package, which I took up and became its customer. Since that first purchase, I have made many more orders at Babe Hause and referred a few good friends who also became happy cloth-diapering mothers.

I love shopping at Babe Hause (owned by Abby) for many reasons. There is a huge array of pocket diapers, inserts and diapering accessories to choose from. This was where I built my stash of Drybees, Happy Heinys, Knickernappies, LoopyDos, various inserts and where I bought Drybees AIO Hybrids as baby shower gifts to introduce new mums to cloth diapers.

Then one day, I got hooked to shopping for the personal care products available too and bought the heavenly-smelling Burt’s Bees shampoo and conditioner. With a fussy baby to look after, the convenience of online shopping and goods delivered to the door-step was simply irresistible!

Pros:

Wide range of pocket diapers, diapering accessories and personal care products
Honest retailer
Efficient delivery
Low shipping costs

Cons:

For cloth diapers: only pocket diapers available (I hope fitted diapers will be offered in future.)
Inventory may not be updated online (Tip: email Abby directly to check stocks availability)

Customer Service – What a World of Differences!

Baby V is outgrowing his current night-time diapering solution, so I have been spending the week researching on even more ‘bullet-proof’ night-time cloth diapers, contacting manufacturers for information and sourcing out retailers in Singapore and Malaysia. The vast difference in the quality of customer service received has been alarming!

Positive Experiences

Manufacturer A (from the U.S.):
- Replied my email within a day
- Answered all my questions and indicated that she has ready stocks
Manufacturer B (from the U.S.):
- Replied my emails within a day
- Answered all my questions
- Offered me a discount to help offset the shipping charges
- Flexible ordering through the same email
- Sent me an invoice very efficiently as she knew I needed the diapers FAST
Retailer C (from Singapore/Malaysia):
- Replied my email in 2 days, explained she was kept busy
- Answered all my questions
- Honestly told me she does not carry the items needed and referred me to Distributor D
Distributor D (from Singapore):
- Replied my email in an hour
- Answered all my questions
- Gave me a discount code meant for existing customers (though I am a new customer)
- Sent me an invoice and amended it very efficiently

Negative Experiences

Retailer E (from Malaysia):
- Replied my email after I followed up with another message
- Explained that my email has been directed wrongly to her spam box
- I place an order for 3 diapers in the e-shop (Stated remaining quantity: 4)
- Before making payment, the owner sent me an email mentioning that there was only 1 piece left.
- I cancelled the order and was relieved that payment was not made; ending up buying from Manufacturer B despite high shipping costs.
Retailer F (from Malaysia):
- After sending her an email, I called her to check her inventory for the items I need.
- No reply after 3 days!
- I sent her an SMS to follow up; she replied this morning that stocks are available
- I placed an order for 3 diapers in the e-shop but the quantity was capped at 2. (Another case of incorrect inventory information in the e-shop. Argh!!!)
- I emailed AND sent the owner an SMS to request for an amended invoice and am hoping for a timely reply…

After-Thoughts

4 out of 6 of the above online shopping experiences were positive.
Both negative experiences were from Malaysia e-shops.
E-shops from the U.S. and Singapore (2 each) provided positive experiences.
I will make repeat purchases at the e-shops that provided positive experiences and recommend them to my friends and readers.
I will patronise the e-shops that provided negative experiences only as a LAST RESORT at my own risk and not recommend them to anyone.
