Review: AVENT BPA-Free Feeding Bottles

Over the past 6 to 7 months, I have been using a wide range of AVENT’s products — breastpump, washable breast pads, feeding bottles, steriliser and warmer. As the potential adverse effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on infants became more widely reported, I decided to switch Baby V’s feeding accessories to BPA-free ones.

Although Baby V doesn’t drink milk from bottles, I occasionally freeze some milk to be subsequently warmed up for cup-feeding. The sterilisation and warming up processes (exposure to high temperature) could lead to BPA leach.

About two weeks ago, I finally saw BPA-free bottles at Robinsons and Isetan (The Gardens, Mid Valley). The new bottles are made from Polyether Sulphone (PES) — a BPA-free material with a natural honey-coloured tint, as stated on the packaging.

However, they were steeply priced relatively to the ordinary range:

260ml (9oz) bottles: 1 for RM49 or 2 for RM95
120ml (4oz) bottles: 1 for RM43

At Robinsons, the promotion was 20% discount and another 5% off by using Mastercard.
At Isetan, the discount was 10% rebate for CIMB cardholders on the last Sunday of the month.

Due to the high prices, I bought only two large bottles for immediate use with the breastpump. For storage purpose, I would certainly search for more cost-efficient bottles.

As for the many gently-used BPA-containing bottles that I have, they can still be used as water bottles (for cooled water) or recycled to store non-food items.

Pros:

Free from BPA
Work well with existing AVENT feeding accessories

Cons:

Highly-priced (lack bundled deals)

Review: AVENT Magic Cup Soft Spout (For 6 Months +)

Baby V has been exclusively breastfed since birth; as a Stay-At-Home-Mum, I enjoy the convenience of direct feeding. I gave him a bottle-feed 1-2 times a week so that he would get used to the bottle teat. When I observed that he LOVED the bottle teat, complacency set in and I stopped offering him expressed breastmilk (EBM) for a while (he was 3 months 3 weeks old).

A month later, I gave him a bottle-feed and he totally rejected it! Panic set in and I quickly searched for an alternative, which was when I bought AVENT Magic Cup Soft Spout.

For the past month, I have been offering Baby V about 10ml of EBM almost daily using the Magic Cup. He neither rejects the spout nor drinks from it; he simply bites it (maybe treating it as a huge teether) and plays with it using his tougue. Hopefully, he will learn to drink from the cup soon.

Pros:

Non-spill
Colourful design attracts baby’s attention

Cons:

The spout has a small part, which needs to be attached to it before use and detached for washing. This tiny piece can easily get lost during washing.

Update on 27 May 2010:

Vee is now 15 months old and drinks well from open cups. I was curious if he could now sip from this cup. If he does, I could use it as his water bottle. I let him try the cup, yet he still does not sip from it. Guess this cup is fated to belong to the next baby.

AVENT Washable Breast Pads

After experiencing frustration caused by adhesive tapes on disposable breast pads, I swopped quickly to AVENT Washable Breast Pads (retail price: RM64.90 for 3 pairs). They are very comfortable and the smartly-designed outer layer of lace prevents slippage. I also like the laundry bag that they come with — convenient for storage or for laundry. The three pairs that I have are still holding up well after months of use. Great quality!

Pros:

Comfortable
Absorbent
Slip-resistant
Easy to care for — handwash or machine-wash
Lasting quality
Great value for money!!!

Cons: Cannot think of any

I love these washable breast pads!
