I received a Moo Moo Kow™ One-Size Snap Diaper (Mint Green) and a Moo Moo Kow™ One-Size Aplix Diaper (White with Blue Snaps) from Abby (who owns Babe Hause and developed the Moo Moo Kow™ brand) to review, in conjunction with Mummy’s Reviews first Giveaway.

Moo Moo Kow™ is a new cloth diaper brand registered in Singapore (my hometown, yeah!) and manufactured in China. Like many parents, I am cautious in using products made in China on Baby V and myself. When the diaper samples reached, my husband and I were wowed by them! Each diaper was professionally packaged with clear washing instructions (essential in ensuring the long life-span of cloth diapers) and looked yummy-licious!

The next thing that impressed me was the two HUGE microfibre inserts that came with each diaper. One insert is large; the other even LARGER, which make each diaper pack seem great value for money.

The listed price of each diaper including inserts is S$30 or RM73, with discount on packaged bundles. Similar one-size diapers would cost about 17% more. For a mum building a new stash of cloth diapers, the savings would be very significant.

Most importantly, the diapers function as well as they look — they are easy to put on (since I am familiar with one-size diapers), have gentle elastics and held on well without any leak through 3 to 4 hours, when Baby V would be changed. I love the dryness provided by the inner suedecloth (as compared to microfleece which feels damp). This is the first one-size diaper I have come across that uses suedecloth.

By mere chance, for the sample snap diaper, the laminate separated from the outer fabric. After I notified Abby, she discovered that this was confined to a particular batch of diapers. Being the usual honest Abby, she immediately checked with customers who have bought similar diapers, was relieved that their diapers were perfectly fine and provided assurance for exchanges should the laminate separate.

By the way, I have learnt this from other cloth-diapering mothers: to seal the PUL for some diapers, you may try throwing them into the dryer for one hot cycle.

Moo Moo Kow™ Snap or Moo Moo Kow™ Aplix?
When Baby V was younger, I enjoyed the convenience of using diapers with Aplix/Velcro tabs, which can provide the perfect fit. Now that he tries to roll over/stand/jump/crawl away during diaper changes, I find snaps much faster in getting the correct fit. It is wise to get a mixture of Aplix or snap diapers to find out for yourself which type you prefer.

From personal observation, Aplix diapers are preferred by Dads, Grannies and first-time cloth-diapering Mums. If you intend to use the diapers on several children, then snap diapers may be able to last longer.

What I like about them:

Outer PUL fabric is the breathable type*

Inner suedecloth layer stays dry

Elastics at the back of the suedecloth layer keeps messes in

Choice of snap or Aplix to fit different preferences

One large and one extra-large microfibre inserts included for high absorbency

Attractively-priced at S$30 or RM73, including two huge inserts

What can be improved:

Only plain colours available — add cute prints?

To get your own Moo Moo Kow™ diapers, visit the list of retailers here or participate in the Giveaway.

* PUL fabric comes in breathable and non-breathable types. The manufacturer has confirmed that breathable PUL fabric is used to make Moo Moo Kow™.

—

Update after 6 months of use:

Our Moo Moo Kow™ Snap and Aplix diapers still perform as good as new. I find myself using the Snap diaper more regularly than the Aplix one to prevent the tab from wearing out. This way, I could reserve the Aplix diaper for my future baby.

Due to the value-for-money bundle and attractive packaging, Moo Moo Kow™ cloth diaper is currently my favourite baby shower gift to introduce new parents to modern cloth diapering. Several friends have converted to using cloth diapers for their babies and a Daddy friend just bought 12 pieces for his son!

At the beginning of my cloth-diapering journey, I decided on using Drybees Pocket Diapers and searched for retailers in Singapore and Malaysia. Babe Hause offered an attractive Newborn Package, which I took up and became its customer. Since that first purchase, I have made many more orders at Babe Hause and referred a few good friends who also became happy cloth-diapering mothers.

I love shopping at Babe Hause (owned by Abby) for many reasons. There is a huge array of pocket diapers, inserts and diapering accessories to choose from. This was where I built my stash of Drybees, Happy Heinys, Knickernappies, LoopyDos, various inserts and where I bought Drybees AIO Hybrids as baby shower gifts to introduce new mums to cloth diapers.

Then one day, I got hooked to shopping for the personal care products available too and bought the heavenly-smelling Burt’s Bees shampoo and conditioner. With a fussy baby to look after, the convenience of online shopping and goods delivered to the door-step was simply irresistible!

Pros:

Wide range of pocket diapers, diapering accessories and personal care products

Honest retailer

Efficient delivery

Low shipping costs

Cons:

For cloth diapers: only pocket diapers available (I hope fitted diapers will be offered in future.)

Inventory may not be updated online (Tip: email Abby directly to check stocks availability)

Since Baby V started teething more than three months ago, he has been drooling heavily and we were always running out of bibs. A common problem with his bibs is that they cannot absorb much liquid, unlike face cloths or cloth wipes.

By chance, I was offered Snapt Bib Clips by Babe Hause at a good discount (listed price: S$15) and I bought 1 set to try. My husband and I love the clips! They cleverly turn any piece of cloth on hand into a bib, so we no longer run out of bibs. I also like the adjustable strap that allows the clips to ‘grow’ with Baby V, which helps to save money on buying larger bibs in future.

As Baby started on semi-solids recently, the bib clips become useful during meal-times as well. On our recent trip to Singapore, we also need not worry about not washing bibs quickly enough.

Pros:

No more running out of bibs

Saves money on buying larger bibs in future

Great for travels

Cons:

Clip that adjusts the strap stopped working after a few weeks’ of use, does not affect functionality much

—

Update after 1-2 months of use:

Vee (or Baby V) started pulling out the cloths from the bib clips to play with the bib clips. Hmmph! We have to stop using the bib clips, perhaps until he is not interested in playing with them anymore.

Before investing in modern cloth diapers, I read tonnes of reviews during my pregnancy and decided on Drybees Pocket Diapers. My first purchase was 5 S-size Drybees from Babe Hause (discounted newborn package) and I used them on Baby V from his second month.

They ran out extremely fast as Baby V poo-ed from 8 to 11 times a day! I did not like traditional cloth diapers (lampin) as it was time-consuming to fold them and they felt very wet around Baby V’s waist.

I bought another 5 S-size Drybees from Babe Hause; the 10 diapers were sufficient for most days.

Even though Drybees Pocket Diapers are popular, the production is stopped this year. When I first received the news, I armed myself with 10 M-size Drybees from Babe Hause and MiaBambina before they run out.

Baby V is a large baby with chunky thighs and he started using M-size when he turned 5 months (~8.4kg). I admit to squeezing him a little into S-size for a week or two!

Babe Hause is doing a clearance sale for Drybees pocket diapers at 25% to 30% off. Grab them while stocks last!

Pros:

Velcro tabs: very easy to use and adjust (Daddy changes Baby V’s diapers and supports Drybees too.)

Inner suedecloth layer keeps baby’s skin dry and rash-free

Sunning the diapers removes poo stains easily

Leak-free when worn properly (for Baby V: up to 3-4 hours using 1 Drybees microfibre insert)

Roomy pocket for inserts

Attractive prints: save money on buying shorts and satisfy mummy’s vanity

Cons:

Velcro tabs: those on 2 diapers curled outwards after washes, so may not stick as well as before

Elastic not encased with extra row of stitching, so needs to ‘roll’ inner suedecloth layer into the diaper (around baby’s thighs) for better coverage

Inner suedecloth material: 2 different materials used in my 10 diapers. In 3 diapers, the inner material pilled badly. I wished only the pill-free material was used.

Despite the above concerns, I still love Drybees pocket diapers.

At the rate that Baby V is growing, I figured that he would burst his M-size Drybees Pocket Diapers by 8 months old (he is now 6.5 months old). Before he was born, I naively thought that he would be using M-size cloth diapers until toddlerhood!

My hunt for pocket diapers that fit chubby babies with thunder thighs thus began. I searched various brands; explored both one-size and sized diapers; and emailed the manufacturers or retailers to confirm the largest waist and thigh settings for their diapers.

The two finalists were Knickernappies 2G Large and Happy Heinys One-Size Pocket Diaper (Snap) (listed price: S$36.50), both available at Babe Hause. Happy Heinys falls into No.2 position because it is packaged with two microfibre inserts, so comes at a higher price tag. I have recently stocked up on inserts and certainly did not need any more. However, I was sold by the cute Silly Monkeys print:

Anyway, the Happy Heinys diaper arrived first and I tried it on Baby V after pre-washing it and the inserts 3 times. It was my first experience with one-size snap diaper and the DOZENS of snaps certainly overwhelmed me! After spending a few minutes figuring out the best settings for the squirmy baby, I was pleased at how well it fitted, with lots of room for future growth.

Both the inner fleece and outer PUL layers were very trim and soft. The elastics were also gentle and did not leave any red marks on Baby V’s chunky thighs. However, the inner fleece layer feels damp whenever I am changing Baby V. My conclusion is that fleece is not as stay-dry as suedecloth (used in Drybees).

Pros:

Largest settings are huge: up to 19-inch thighs and 31.5-inch waist*!

Gentle elastics

Trim and soft

Cute designs available

Packaged with 2 microfibre inserts, so is cost-efficient for mums new to cloth-diapers

Cons:

Packaged with 2 microfibre inserts, so is more pricey for mums with a large stash of inserts

Inner fleece layer feels damp during diaper changes

Happy Heinys can make mums happier by giving an option to buy the diapers without inserts. I will decide which diaper to stock up on after trying out Knickernappies.
*Fully stretched, measured by retailer

I bought a Wahmies Fun Prints Wet Bag (Regular size) when it was on sale at Mia Bambina (listed price: RM60) and just bought another one from Babe Hause. I adore the beautiful prints!

Besides cloth diapers, it is also great for holding milk-stained clothes, wet face cloths, dirty bibs and swimwear. My new wet bag is used for holding Baby V’s lunch/dinner (and the accompanying cutlery and bib) when we dine outside.

The wet bag is a must-have item in a diaper bag!

What we like about it:

Multi-purpose

Keeps the diaper bag well-organised

Keeps wetness and odour in

Washes very well (machine-washable)

Attractive prints

What can be improved:

Add a handle

These LoopyDo inserts by Knickernappies are my current favourites! I bought four pieces (RRP: USD7.49 each) and washed them twice with other new inserts before using. As I frequently use microfibre insert with a hemp booster, these trim 2-in-1 inserts fit my preference perfectly. The hemp material is very soft and the inserts stay in great shape when worn. I could not resist touching Baby V’s bums when he is using the inserts!

The ones that I bought are the 2G version, 16″ x 5.5″. Though they are relatively narrow compared to other inserts, they did not scrunch up at the crotch when used with Drybees Fleece Pocket Diapers, to my relief.

Currently, these LoopyDos are used for night-time, together with 2 GAD Hemp Diaper Doublers, providing excellent absorbency over 12 hours.

For outings, my latest preference is to use a LoopyDo with a Knickernappies 2G Pocket Diaper, which is extremely trim even under pants.

Pros:

Prewashed — can be used immediately

Trim combination of microfibre and hemp (clever design!), fantastic for outings

Loop design enables faster drying

Cons:

Even the new 2G version is still relatively narrow

—

Since I love the softness of microfibre inserts and the convenience of one-size inserts, I bought four GAD One-Size Microfibre Terry Inserts from Babe Hause (listed price: S$8.50 each).

The quality of GAD products always impresses me. The inserts are relatively wide and long (5″ x 11″) and do not shrink after washes (unlike hemp inserts), so fits Baby V’s Drybees and GAD Medium-size pocket diapers snugly.

Since microfibre absorbs liquid much faster than hemp, I prefer to use these inserts (instead of GAD One-Size Hemp Inserts) for Baby V’s GAD pocket diaper. This avoided the problem of pee flowing out from between the side snaps before being absorbed.

Pros:

Long and can be folded for more absorbency in wetter areas

Loop design enables faster drying

Work well with Drybees and GAD pocket diapers

Cons:

Not trim, could be bulky on smaller babies

I like several Wahmies products (especially Drybees diapers), so decided to try two Wahmies One-Size Microfibre Inserts from Babe Hause (listed price: S$8.50 each). The inserts are wide and EXTREMELY long (5″ x 18″+) and can be folded to fit even Extra-Large pocket diapers. As Baby V is a large baby, these inserts could be very useful for him in the long-run.

My initial concern was whether the snaps in the inserts would cause discomfort to Baby V when he lies on his back, rolls onto his tummy or sits up. No matter how I position the snaps, they seem to be at a places where the baby could apply pressure on them. So far, Baby V has not complained, so I presume he is comfortable with the inserts.

Folding the inserts in front to fit a Medium-size Drybees pocket diaper gives 6 layers of microfibre (trimmer than I expected) and is great protection for Baby V’s 3-hour morning nap.

For play-time and outings, I would prefer to use other trimmer inserts.

Pros:

Longest inserts that I have seen — can be folded for more absorbency in wetter areas

Can fit XL diapers, great for big babies

Cons:

Would be bulky on smaller babies

One snap was missing after four months’ of use
