Here’s Part 3 of Mum’s Special series covering a review of Angel Mel Collections Mama Wonder Wet Bags designed for baby and Mummy. baby-mel.com provided me with 2 small wet bags to review, and that completes my wet bags stash. *Grins*

Uses of Small Wet Bags for Baby & Mummy

In case it’s the first time you’ve heard of wet bags, here are some fabulous uses for the small ones:

Store baby’s wet and dirty bibs, hankies and cloth wipes
Store baby’s used cutlery after a messy meal
Store pacifiers, teethers and other small baby items
Store Mummy’s used cloth pads

To date, I’ve a “collection” of 1 large and 1 medium wet bags for wet clothes after swimming, 1 medium for cloth diapers, 2 medium ones for Vee’s dining stuff, 1 small for tiny baby stuff, and these 2 new ones for cloth pads.

Wet bags are definitely must-haves for an organised diaper bag. Simply use different prints or colours for different purposes.

How to Handle Cloth Pads Outdoors?

Since I’ve introduced you to cloth pads in the previous 2 articles, some Mums are wondering what to do with used cloth pads outdoors. For each trip, bring sufficient clean cloth pads or liners. Cloth pads can be snapped up into a cute bundle, while liners are more space-saving. Place them in any pouch or wet bag compartment.

After a change, snap or roll the used cloth pad or liner into a bundle and place into a cloth wet bag with waterproof lining. Handle the cloth pad upon reaching home. That’s it, very simple.

First Impressions

Both wet bags come in lovely designer prints. Trillbrook Pink is very sweet while Chillis make me feel like a hot mama.

The size looks roomy, especially the double zippers type.

I like the handle, which is useful for a quick trip to the washroom for working mums.

One thing that bothered me is the zips that are sewn too far away from the edges. This means odour or wetness could escape, so I can’t place anything too wet in the bag. Luckily cloth pads aren’t very wet items.

My Detailed Review

Rating Guide: ★ Oh no! ★★ Poor ★★★ Fair ★★★★ Good ★★★★★ Excellent!

These reviews are based on using the wet bags for cloth pads only. Of course, you may use the bags for other purposes mentioned above.

1. Angel Mel Collections Mama Wonder Bags (Small, Single Zipper)

(a) Laundry: ★★★★ This wet bag can be washed on warm or handwashed. Since it’s small, I’m fine with handwashing it together with the cloth pads. After several washes, it has held up well.

(b) Capacity: ★★★★ The waterproof compartment can hold 3 Fresh Moon AIO 11″ cloth pads or 2 Fresh Moon 11″ fleece bodies and 4 x 11″ soakers. For shorter or trimmer pads such as the Lunpads Maxi Pad & Liner, perhaps 1 more could be stuffed inside.

The outer compartment with snap can hold 1 clean pad or 2 soakers.

(c) Performance: ★★★★ My trips are usually very short, so I didn’t experience any odour issue upon reaching home.

As mentioned, the zip leaves a gap at the edge, so avoid using the wet bag for very wet items.

(d) Quality: ★★★★ The wet bag is generally well made, except for the zip that’s off-position. I’d need to use them over more cycles to see if the quality lasts. So far so good.

(e) Overall Value: ★★★ Each Angel Mel Collections small wet bag retails at RM49.90. The price is a little steep for a small wet bag with an off-position zip. (I prefer the double-zipper bag reviewed below.)

2. Angel Mel Collections Mama Wonder Bags (Small, Double Zippers)

(a) Laundry: ★★★ I’ve handwashed the wet bag several times. The red dye bled a little the first time; the water turned clear upon the fourth rinse.

The unique 2-compartment design is a little tricky to dry, so I flip it inside out to dry the PUL faster.

(b) Capacity: ★★★★★ Each waterproof compartment can hold 3 Fresh Moon AIO 11″ cloth pads or 2 Fresh Moon 11″ fleece bodies and 4 x 11″ soakers. So both compartments can hold about 6 medium AIOs, definitely enough for a full day out.

(c) Performance: ★★★ Like above, my trips are usually very short, so I didn’t experience any odour issue upon reaching home.

Also, the zip leaves a gap at the edge, so avoid using the wet bag for very wet items.

[Stylish Mum's Essentials #5] Wet Bag that Transforms into a Diaper Bag

Stylish Mum’s Essentials item #5 is weehuggers Wet Bag – Hobo Bag, retailed at one of my favourite stores, Whoopeekiddies (now known as Milagro Trading). Even before this article, I’ve been Whoopeekiddies’ regular customer, buying cloth diapers and even personal care products from there.

The weehuggers Wet Bag is a smartly-designed bag with an integrated wet bag compartment to hold wet or soiled baby items. Certainly a dream bag for cloth diapering mums! Even if you aren’t cloth diapering baby, this bag eliminates the need to bring plastic or ziploc bags to hold baby’s dirty clothes, bibs, etc.

This multi-purpose bag in a cheerful designer print has become my grab-and-go diaper bag for more than 4 months. I’m so000 grateful that Yee Ling from Whoopeekiddies sent me one for a review.

What is a Wet Bag?

Just in case you’re new to this, a wet bag is a cloth bag with a zip closure and waterproof inner lining. It was originally designed to hold wet or soiled cloth diapers when Mummy and baby are on the go. Since its invention by the cloth diapering industry, Mums have found a trillion uses for wet bags, limited only by your own imagination. Read some of the popular uses here.

About weehuggers™ Wet Bag

The brand, weehuggers, is owned by Blueberry diapers, which is famous for its minky cloth diapers. These are the main features of the wet bag:

Outer layer: Designer cotton fabric
Inner lining: Waterproof PUL (polyurethan laminate)
Handle: Yes
Dimensions: 16″ x 14″ x 3″
Capacity: Up to 10 wet diapers
Country of origin: Made in the U.S.A.; wee-be-gone™ patches made in Japan.

First Impressions

The bag is very pretty and does not look like wet bag at all. Who’d have guessed that it’s one?!?

There are 2 zippered compartments — the larger one is for wet stuff, the smaller one for dry stuff. Within the wet bag compartment is a unique wee-be-gone™ patch, which is supposed to “absorb the organic compound Trimethylamine – an ammonia-like gas present in soiled diapers”.

The bag is generally well-made, except for some loose threads inside 1 of the zips. Such threads risk jamming the zip, so I promptly trimmed them off.

How We Tested It

(a) Laundry: I handwashed it in cold before first use. After that, I flip the wet compartment inside out and throw it into the washing machine with Vee’s usual laundry, whenever needed. Ever since this wet bag became my staple grab-and-go diaper bag, I minimise washings needed by putting a wet bag into the wet compartment. Crazy, right?

(b) Capacity: This wet bag was tested heavily during our 1-week trip in Perth. Instead of lugging my gigantic LeSportsac diaper bag around, I used the weehuggers wet bag as a compact diaper bag.

It contained a full day’s travelling needs — 5 cloth diapers with extra disposable inserts, a few cloth wipes, a packet of wet wipes, an extra set of clothes, and a travel diaper mat clutch. Wet cloth diapers are bulkier and get squeezed into the wet compartment. At the end of the day, the wet diapers are empty into a large travelling wet bag or diaper pail.

Nowadays, I store 2 cloth diapers, several cloth wipes, a packet of wet wipes, an extra set of clothes and a travelling placemat in the bag. Anytime we’ve a short errand to run or to attend Vee’s Shichida classes, I simply grab the hobo bag plus my small handbag, and we’re ready to leave. With the wet compartment, it’s perfectly ok to forget to bring a wet bag along. Oh… how I love this!

Stylish Mum’s Tip: Carrying a diaper bag separate from your handbag makes it easier to change handbags to match your outfit for the day. It also means you can leave the heavier diaper bag lying around without the risk of losing your valuables. A small handbag also looks more elegant than a bigger one.

(c) Performance: So far, dampness is well-contained within the wet compartment. The wee-be-gone patch seems to do its job of absorbing odors, even after a day of travelling with wet diapers in it. I didn’t have the chance to test it with poopy diapers because Vee has been pooing into the toilet / potty since 10 months old.

(d) Overall Value: The usual price of a weehuggers Wet Bag is S$46, and it’s now at 15% off (S$39.10), which is a real steal, considering this dual-functions as a compact and stylish diaper bag. I’ve been using the weehuggers Wet Bag for more than 4 months and wish it’d never ever wear out…

Welcome to Part 4 of Mummy’s Reviews™’ Bummis Review Series! Tiny Pants provided me with a Bummis Large Fabulous Wet Bag to try out. It’s indeed large and fabulous, doubling up as a diaper pail liner!

Closures: Pull-strings AND zipper
Dimensions: ~ 23″ x 23″ (58cm x 58cm)
Country of origin: Made in Montreal (Canada)

The Large Fabulous Wet Bag is EXCLUSIVE to Bummis Organic Cotton Diaper Kit. Small and medium Fabulous Wet Bags are available, featuring a snap-able handle and a zipper.

First Impressions

This is the LARGEST wet bag I have seen! I was totally blown over when I first opened it up. It fits nicely into my existing dry diaper pail, with ample excess fabric. I like the choice of closing it with either pull-strings or a zipper and was eager to test it out during our 1-week Perth trip, with an aim to cloth-diaper Vee as much as possible!

Moreover, it’s in the same familiar Bummis Super Brite print, which livens up Vee’s room.

How We Tested It

(a) Prewash & Laundry: As with any new laundry items, I handwashed it in cold water once before initial use. After that, it’s very easy to wash and dry after use. The laminate has withstood more than 2 months of regular use, and looks as good as new.

(b) Effectiveness: During our 1-week trip to Perth, my plan was to cloth-diaper Vee whenever possible, so we chose a service apartment with a washing machine and dryer. I hung the pull-strings on a door knob to use it as a hanging laundry bag. When doing so, it was difficult to use the zip, so I fastened the pull-strings each time after dumping a cloth diaper or soiled laundry in. It has a HUGE capacity and can hold 1-2 days’ worth of cloth diapers.

It’s very sturdy and is currently my preferred diaper pail liner.

(e) Overall value: There is NO price for this Large Fabulous Wet Bag because it’s available exclusively in Bummis Organic Cloth Diaper Kits. Being somewhat of a mathematical freak, I derived the value of the wet bag by taking the price of the diaper kit and subtracting the total value of all the other items in the kit.

My Opinion on Bummis Diaper Kits

Getting a Bummis Diaper Kit is a convenient way to have the complete diapering system in place — diaper covers, prefolds, liners and wet bag (cum diaper pail liner). Before Vee was born, I was shopping all over the place for the various items. The number of items included in each diaper kit is reasonable for starting a stash.

Personally, I prefer to have more Infant-sized than Baby-sized prefolds (because they’re slimmer and more versatile) and find diaper covers a MUST for my newborn baby. Most newborns don’t fit into one-size cloth diapers until they’re 5kg, about 2-3 months old. At the newborn stage, the prefold + diaper cover system is economical since soooo many diaper changes are needed. (FYI: Vee’s highest record was 11 poos in ONE day, right after the confinement lady left. I nearly freaked out!)

Conclusion: if I were to choose right at the start, the Infant Diaper Kit would attract me more.

Spinkie gave me the opportunity to review The Pat-a-Cake Wet Bag, which is the perfect match to The Pat-a-Cake Baby Blanket in the same Alexander Henry’s popular “Juicy Jungle” print. In case you’re new to Mummy’s Reviews™, read the many uses of wet bags and why I never have enough of them here.

About The Pat-a-Cake Wet Bag

Capacity: 4 to 6 cloth diapers (Actual test: up to 8 cloth diapers)
Country of origin: Made in the U.S.A.

The wet bags are available in 2 sizes (small or large), and a range of lovely designer prints.

First Impressions

The wet bag is beautiful, big and roomy. I like the snap handle, which means it’d be easy to attach it to the stroller, diaper bag or virtually anywhere convenient.

The is the first time that I try a wet bag with ProCare as waterproof barrier. ProCare feels thicker than polyurethane-laminated (PUL) fabric. It also gives off an odd smell, which is common with new plastic items. Suddenly, a thought ran through my mind, “Please don’t let this contain PVC!” If it contains PVC, I wouldn’t use it (see note at the bottom).

As a cautious Mummy, I did a search on ProCare. Wazoodle says that it contains 25% polyester and 75% vinyl. It is a proprietary formulation that does not contain DEHP, Phlalates or BPA plasticizers. Furthermore, the barrier fabric comparison page mentions that ProCare is of higher duty than PUL and can withstand more washes. This convinces me that ProCare is a safe fabric to use and puts my mind at ease. Phew!

How We Tested It

Laundry: Before initial use, I handwashed it once. I didn’t like the lingering odd plasticky smell, so aired it by the window for 2 days. After another wash, the smell finally disappeared.

Performance: During our recent trip to Perth, this became our spare wet bag in the diaper bag, since we went out every day for a week. It’s thicker than my usual PUL wet bag, so takes up a little more space in the diaper bag. But that’s a marginal difference.

It’s very spacious, and can actually hold up to 8 medium and large cloth diapers, instead of 4 to 6 as described. As what wet bags should do, it successfully keeps dampness and smell in.

Each large wet bag is USD25, while the small version is USD18. This is reasonable as it comes in attractive designer prints, quality fabrics and excellent workmanship, the same qualities found in The Pat-a-Cake Baby Blanket. For a short trip, it is pretty enough to hang on its own by the stroller. And yes, your fashionista girl-friend would definitely love it as a baby shower gift.

Baby’s Laundry & Cloth Diapers: How To Store Them Until Wash Day

When Vee was younger, he salivated like a waterfall, regurgitated milk due to mild reflux, and poo-ed up to 11 times a day! Every day, I dealt with a mountain of dirty laundry consisting of bibs, towels, clothes, cloth wipes and cloth diapers. Being an organisation-obsessed Mummy, I experimented with different systems to store the dirty laundry until wash day. Let’s explore the 4 systems I have tried:

A. 1 Wet Pail & 1 Laundry Basket

What this means: Soak laundry with poo, pee, or milk in a pail of water (called a wet pail) until wash day.

When I used this: First month (it was the confinement lady’s preference)

Advantages:

Prevents staining from poo or milk (Once set, milk stains turn yellowish and are hard to remove.)
Suitable if your washing machine has no prewash function. (Alternatively, you can simply rinse dirty laundry once before washing.)
If you do laundry once in more than 2 days, this prevents mildew problem

Disadvantages:

Drowning hazard! (That’s why I HAVE NOT used this method since the confinement lady left.)
Soaking is not suitable for PUL diapers (wears them out faster)
The pail gets really heavy and is bad for the back
Needs additional work of pouring away the water and wringing the items dry on wash day
Stagnant water may develop odour

B. 1 Dry Pail & 1 Laundry Basket

What this means: Just leave laundry with poo, pee or milk in a dry pail with lid until wash day.

When I used this: Until baby was 7 months old, before he started eating solid foods. Breastfed-baby poo smells fine.

Advantages:

Very simple and saves time!

Disadvantages:

Non-breastfed-baby poo or milk stains may set in after some time. (I do laundry every day, so this is less of an issue.)

C. 1 Wet Pail, 1 Dry Pail & 1 Laundry Basket

What this means:

For soiled cloth diapers: Roll off or spray poo into toilet and leave in a wet pail with lid (without soaking)
For items with puke mess: Rinse and rub off milk by hand, then leave them in the same wet pail (without soaking)
For wet cloth diapers: Leave them in a dry pail with lid

When I use this: After baby started eating solid foods at 6.5 months old. Why? Because his poo started to stink BIG TIME, and I prefer to spray them off once I’m free instead of waiting until the next morning. This has become my favourite and permanent system.

Advantages:

Prevents stains from setting
Convenient access to pail at 1 more place. (For example, my dry pail in the bedroom, while the wet pail in the bathroom.)

Disadvantages:

Expense of getting 1 more pail

D. 1 Pail Liner or Large Hanging Wet Bag

What this means: Just leave ALL laundry in a pail liner or large hanging wet bag until wash day.

When I use this: During travels, especially stay-overs at my Mum’s place in Singapore. My longest stayover was almost 2 months. I survived 2 months without using a pail or laundry basket! Yes, it can be done.

Advantages:

Space-saving, you’d just need a corner in the room or hang the wet bag behind the door

Disadvantages:

Non-breastfed-baby poo or milk stains may set in after some time. To overcome this, consider removing poo into the toilet and rinsing milk off before putting into the pail liner or wet bag.

Which Pail, Pail Liner and Wet Bag?

1. Dry Pail

My dry pail is a generic large plastic pail with lid bought at a local supermarket. After putting the pail liner in, the lid can’t be closed tightly. No odour escapes from the gap unless I put my nose into the pail! Vee tries to play with the lid at times, and I simply ask him to leave it alone.

2. Wet Pail

My wet pail is a plastic pail from Mothercare. I was reluctant to pay a premium price for the one printed with Winnie the Pooh. When this white pail was released at a 20% off, I grabbed it at about RM40 (USD14 or SGD17). It is quite small and takes up little space in the bathroom. However, it is sufficient only if you do laundry every 1 to 2 days, without many soiled items. In the first month, Vee went through 15 to 18 square nappies a day and quickly filled the pail to the brim.

These are some other options for pails:

a large waste can such as those by Rubbermaid
any generic plastic bucket with lid

3. Pail Liner

How To Control The Smell From Dirty Laundry?

I have a super-sensitive nose and have not experienced any odour issues with my dirty laundry consisting of poo, pee and milk.

As mentioned above, breastfed-baby poo smells fine, so no odour problem.
Pee in cloth diapers don’t really smell. If they do, you’d need to strip wash the diapers by using these steps. (In contrast, I find pee in disposable diapers very stinky!)
When baby starts eating solid food, the poo starts to stink like adults’ poo, so remove any solid as soon as you’ve time. (Poo in disposable diapers is also supposed to be flushed down the toilet for environmental reasons. It is stated clearly on every packaging, but I doubt many people know about it.)
Do laundry every 1 to 2 days. Stretch it to 3 days and risk facing mildew problems with damp clothes and cloth diapers, especially in a humid environment such as the bathroom.
Cover the pail.

Optional steps you may wish to take:

Sprinkle a little baking soda onto cloth diapers in the pail
Some pail liners and wet bags have a piece of fabric sewn into the seam (view picture below). Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the fabric.

Conclusion

Dirty laundry with cloth diapers and wipes can be managed very easily once you establish a laundry system and routine. The best system is the one that works for you and your baby. Have fun exploring!

I bought this Wahmies Fun Prints Wet Bag (All Day) in Angel Bears print from Babe Hause during a clearance sale. Since then, this portable laundry bag has accompanied us to every out-of-town and overseas trip.

First Impressions

Angel Bears isn’t my ideal type of print. I’d prefer something brighter and more cheerful. Since this was the only design left on clearance, I bought it.

The little piece of fabric wasn’t sewn onto my wet bag. I am not bothered by this as I don’t use essential oil anyway. Perhaps this is the reason for its clearance.

Our Experience Using It

Laundry: It has stood up to washes after 1 year of use and still look as good as the day I received it.

Performance: I use it to store Vee’s dirty laundry and cloth diapers in the hotel room or my mum’s place. It can be hooked behind the door, on the door knob or anywhere convenient. The capacity is big enough to hold 1 day’s worth of laundry. The waterproof PUL layer keeps any dampness in, while the zip prevents odour from escaping.

When my Medium wet bag is in the wash, I’d put this large wet bag in the diaper bag. It is rather compact after folding.

The retail price of this wet bag is USD18.50, while I bought it at RM55 (about USD17.70). The lasting quality is worth the price.

Wet bags are a must-have for EVERY diaper bag. If “wet bag” is totally an alien term to you or sounds something like a bag accidentally dropped onto a puddle of water, then please read on:

What is a Wet Bag?

A wet bag is a cloth bag with a zip closure and waterproof inner lining. It was originally designed to hold wet or soiled cloth diapers when Mummy and baby are on the go. There are various sizes to suit different needs. Since its invention by the cloth-diapering industry, Mums have found a trillion uses for wet bags, limited by only your own imagination:

for the poopy / pukey newborn: hold wet/soiled cloth diapers, bibs, handkerchiefs, clothes, etc.
for the messy eater: hold cutlery, utensils, boxes of snacks, spare bibs, etc. After a messy meal, dump everything back into the wet bag.
for the water baby: hold wet swimwear and towels after a dip in the pool
for the toddler in daycare: hold a spare change of clothes. After bathing and changing, keep used clothes in wet bag.
for the young Picasso: hold used painting accessories after enrichment activity
for the grandchild camping over at Granny’s place: a large wet bag that can be hung at the door knob serves as a travel-size laundry basket
for Mummy: hold soiled cloth pads, cloth wipes, make-up accessories, etc.

Now you’d probably understand why I never have enough wet bags.

How We Tested It

Laundry: Before initial use, I washed it by hand and there was no colour run. Normal laundry has been easy: To reuse it in a rush, simply give the inner surface a good wipe. Otherwise, flip it inside out and toss into your normal laundry.

Performance: I use the wet bag to hold Vee’s meal-time accessories when dining out. It is very roomy and contains everything needed. The waterproof lining works well in keeping the dampness of his wet handkerchiefs in.

I like the loop handle that makes holding easy. Often at home, I need to carry Vee up/down the stairs while grabbing a few dirty handkerchiefs and a cup for washing. Instead of using a baby carrier, I could also dump the messy stuff into the wet bag and still carry Vee.

The capacity is large because of its wide bottom design. The stretchy fabric means you can stuff it like a dumpling.

The price of a Bouncy Baby Wet Bag is RM27 (~USD8 or SGD12). A similar-sized wet bag imported from the U.S. could cost twice as much.

Review: Planet Wise Wet Bag

Wet bags never seem to be enough because they serve a million purposes. I bought a small Planet Wise wet bag from Babe Hause (listed price: S$15) to store cloth pads.

Since my menses have yet to return, I ended up using the wet bag to store cutlery for Vee’s meal, when I want to travel light. Being small (8″ x 11″), it can store a small bowl, a couple of spoons and a spare cloth wipe.

Planet Wise wet bags come in such a wide variety of attractive prints that I took a long time to decide which one to get. (Yes, it was hard restricting myself to just ONE!)

The actual wet bag looks as great as its picture; the outer fabric is very smooth and I like that the inner laminate layer is black, which is a much more stylish than white laminate in the other wet bags I own.

The zip is also well-sewn, minimizing any leak from contents in the wet bag. (As a daughter of a seamstress, I am VERY particular about sewing quality.)

I am satisfied with my purchase and would consider going back to Planet Wise when I need (or more like want) another wet bag. Right, I do need one — for the cloth pads!

Pros:

Attractive prints
Well-sewn
Inner laminate is black — I find it stylish

Cons:

No handle

For cloth diapering on the go, a wet bag comes in very useful. I bought a Wahmies Fun Prints Wet Bag (Regular size) when it was on sale at Mia Bambina (listed price: RM60) and just bought another one from Babe Hause. I adore the beautiful prints!

Besides cloth diapers, it is also great for holding milk-stained clothes, wet face cloths, dirty bibs and swimwear. My new wet bag is used for holding Baby V’s lunch/dinner (and the accompanying cutlery and bib) when we dine outside.

The wet bag is a must-have item in a diaper bag!
