[Stylish Mum’s Essentials] Spinkie diaper mat clutch, wet bag & the butterfly pillow

Babying in style just got easier, with Spinkie‘s designer Diaper Mat Clutch, Wet Bag,  and improved The Butterfly Pillow. For 4+ months, I’ve been happy to whip out the gorgeous diaper mat clutch in baby changing rooms, and the wet bag in restaurants. The Butterfly Pillow still follows me on every road trip. Here are our reviews…

1. Spinkie Diaper Mat Clutch

These are the main features of the diaper mat clutch:

(a) Design: ★★★★★ For obvious hygiene reasons, I bring a portable diaper changing mat for all outdoor trips with Baby Jae.

The problem with the diaper mats that come with my diaper bags: each folds into thirds. Open up, lay on an outdoor changing table, fold it up, 1/3 of the contaminated surface will touch the clean surface. What’s the point?!? I shudder to open it up for the next use.

Spinkie’s diaper mat folds into quarters, keeping the inner surface clean, and rolls up into a compact bundle to fit into a small diaper bag. Finally, someone got her Math right.

Above shows the printed side of the mat. Lay baby onto the plain waterproof side during diaper changes, so that any mess can be easily wiped away.

(b) Laundry: ★★★★ I washed it by hand in cold water once, no colour run. For subsequent use, I stick the hook and loop closures together, put it in a laundry net and toss it into the washing machine — at 40°C, tumble-dried and line dried.

The laundry tab conservatively says hand wash, lay flat to dry and no tumble dry. I broke all the washing rules, ha!

(c) Performance: ★★★★★ The diaper mat is a good size, big enough for 7 months old Baby Jae, and fits well onto the changing tables we’ve used. It’s soft and doesn’t slide around easily when baby wiggles.

(d) Quality: ★★★★★ The sewing and workmanship is excellent. After many washings, the diaper mat clutch still looks and performs as good as new.

(e) Overall Value: ★★★★ Each Spinkie Diaper Mat Clutch retails at USD38.50, about SGD49 or RM123. Currently, it’s a unique yummylicious design that keeps the inner surface clean after use, so is worth the price.

Definitely suitable for Mummy who wants a gorgeous and hygienic changing surface for her precious baby.

What we like about it:

• Rolls up into a compact bundle — ultra-portable
• Beautiful print that would turn heads in the diaper changing room

What can be improved:

• Use snaps instead of Velcro tabs
• Information on laundry tab is too conservative

2. Spinkie Wet Bag

I always have at least 2 medium-sized wet bags in my diaper bag — 1 for used cloth diapers, and 1 for mealtime essentials (cloth wipes / bibs / cutlery). For rotation during weekends, I need 4, so this Spinkie wet bag came in useful to replace an older one that has worn out.

These are the main features of the wet bag:

• Outer layer: Made of printed cotton fabric
• Inner layer: Made of waterproof ProCare fabric
• Loop handle: Yes, with snap button
• Dimensions: 12″ x 12″
• Capacity: 5 cloth diapers
• Country of origin: Handmade in The Philippines

Note: Wazoodle mentions that ProCare is “free of lead, phlalates, BPS or brominates and is FDA GRAS compliant for contact with foods“.

(a) Design: ★★★★ The wet bag is beautiful and roomy, with a wide base. I like the snap handle, which makes for easy attachment to the baby carrier, stroller, diaper bag or anywhere convenient.

The end of the zip is well sealed with an piece of fabric over it. Clever!

This is the second wet bag I have that uses ProCare (instead of the PUL) as the inner waterproof fabric. This time, no odour produced by the new bag.

(c) Performance: ★★★★★ This wet bag holds 5 one size or large cloth diapers, so it’s sufficient for whole day outings. I’m using it to hold the kids’ wet cloth wipes and dirty bibs after meals. So far, no odour or dampness has escaped.

(d) Quality: ★★★★★ The sewing and workmanship is excellent. After many washings, the wet bag still looks and performs as good as new.

(e) Overall Value: ★★★ Each Spinkie Wet Bag retails at USD23.50, about SGD30 or RM75. For a good quality medium-sized designer wet bag, I think the price is fair. It makes a practical baby shower gift.

• Durable ProCare fabric that can last many washes
• Beautiful print that livens up the nursery or stroller
• Machine-washable for easy maintenance though laundry tab says otherwise

What can be improved:

• Information on laundry tab is too conservative
• Offer wet bags in smaller and larger sizes for more options

3. Spinkie The Butterfly Pillow (improved version)

Last year, I reviewed The Butterfly Pillow here and selected it as one of Mummy’s Reviews’ Year 2011 Top 10 Favourite Items. Ever since Spinkie has moved from Singapore to The Philippines, these are the improvements made:

• The stitching is perfect especially on the middle part where the stuffing goes in
• Fiberfill changed to a high grade one with longer hairs that won’t lump or separate despite numerous tugging, pulling and washing.
• Pillow stays in its shape, form and soft feel for longer
